After our daughter died in 2014, 2 things were said that 1) helped me move forward and 2) felt appropriate and affirming:
1) “What is this experience teaching me that I couldn’t learn any other way.” I attended a Sanskrit workshop with : she shared this wisdom which was passed down from her Guru, Shri Brahmanada Sarasvati. This helped me move forward.
&
2) “fu€k.” A strong, beautiful woman I’ve known for years - our kids went to grade school together - owned a local restaurant, and when I visited the restaurant after our loss, this was the word she said. Quietly and reverently. It was affirming and left space for me to share/not share from there.
I hold no monopoly on the dos and don’ts of supporting someone who has lost a child. These are solely based on my experience. I invite you, whoever needs to read this, not to fear doing or saying the wrong things but instead, meet a person who is suffering with presence, compassion, and the capacity to hold space for their suffering.
In loving memory of
