Prior to the age of six, it is easy for us to pick up other people’s beliefs, especially from figures of authority. In a school setting, authority figures such as teachers can dramatically influence our beliefs about ourselves. If you are told you are stupid, tone deaf or lazy – and take on that belief – you will probably live up to the label. Rather than being taught how to, children drop into “I can’t”. Others may fight to prove the teacher wrong and develop an enormous resilience, refusing to accept what they have been told.
