Recycling of heavy metals from LED lamps' waste by bioleaching
Researchers at TMU's faculty of Chemical Engineering, have come up with a new way to remove toxic metals from the environment as well as the retrieval of heavy metals contained within LED bulbs by recycling.
LED lamps' waste production, like other electronic wastes, due to its diverse and widespread use in various industries, is increasing. These lamps are released into the environment as waste while containing metals such as radium, copper, gold and silver, metals that are valuable on one hand and harmful on the other hand (in case of abandonment in the environment). Researchers at TMU have come up with a plan to recover heavy and valuable metals from the waste of LED bulbs by bioleaching method.
Dr. Mohammad Mousavi, an academic member of the Chemical Engineering faculty, while stating the above, explained about the characteristics of this research project: Bioleaching is cheaper than common methods, in addition to being environmentally friendly. Dr. Mousavi added: "In this project, burnt lamps are collected and after being crushed and powdered, they are used to recycle heavy toxic metals. This method is appropriate for the environment as well as being economical." He also mentioned: “Our team is the fifth research team in the world, working on this technology."
