School of Health Sciences – “Toward a healthier people”
School of Health Sciences (SHS) is a new academic school within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Established in 2012, its goal and mission is to prepare highly skilled health care professionals in an integrated and multidisciplinary learning environment. The School of Health Sciences offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in health sciences, diagnosis of diseases, medical anaesthesia, with other specializations planned for the future. In liaison with health care professionals, the school aims to fulfill the growing demand for specialized technical non-clinical and well-trained staff in various aspects of medical technologies. This is done by incorporating scientific knowledge with laboratory training skills and clinical placement opportunities to improve and maintain personal and community health. Mission
The mission of SHS is to prepare highly educated and competent health professionals to provide health care and professional service required to meet the challenging health sector in Kurdistan Iraq. The current academic program specializes in two main medical disciplines, i.e., Medical laboratory Science
& Anesthetist Science. Vision

The Curriculum of the SHS of the University of Duhok integrates basic biomedical sciences theories and concepts with practical laboratory and hospital training in the various clinical specialties. This approach will lead towards solving real health problems by applying the outcomes of clinical research. Duration of Study
The program of the SHS provides students with a solid overview of health sciences in four years of study. Students will undertake three years of intensive theoretical knowledge and learning on various disciplines of health sciences and laboratory practices under supervision of highly qualified tutors and faculty. During the fourth year of the SHS program, students must complete a full year of a special integrated training program which comprises twenty per cent theory and eighty per cent field practice in their area of specialty. The specific requirements for training and the detailed outline of the program will be determined by the relevant Clinical Department. The practical and clinical placement of fourth year students will be decided in liaison with the health authorities in Duhok Province. Language of Instruction: English
The objectives
The objectives of School of Health Sciences are to:
Developing, implementing and reviewing the curriculum by expert academics in the field of the SHS so as to provide broad direction in the Biomedical Sciences. The curriculum of Health Sciences will shape the learning outcomes, provide in-depth knowledge and give great career opportunities as focuses on developing practical skills. Produce quality health professionals in various disciplines of biomedical Sciences who are ready to make a difference and contribute to community health. Conduct applied research in basic and translational health sciences (from bench to bedside approach) and foster interactions and collaboration between faculty, researchers and clinicians. Provide opportunities and academic pathways into postgraduate studies followed by high degree awards in modern health sciences to equip graduates with tools for solving modern health problems. Develop and apply advanced multidisciplinary educational and practical laboratory technologies to provide better health care and higher standards of professional service to individuals and communities. Conduct professional career development and continuous learning programs and training courses in public health, infection control, laboratory sciences, clinical and allied health services.
