Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States and is most famous for freeing the black slaves and ending slavery. He won the election in 1861. Lincoln was born into a poor family but thanks to his self-discipline and perseverance, he taught himself by reading books and became a lawyer. It takes self-confidence to rise from a humble background in poverty on a farm in the countryside to become president. During the 1860's, the United States fell into Civil War when the pro-slavery south wanted to separate from the anti-slavery north. Thanks to the cooperation of Lincoln and his generals, the north won the war and the slaves were pronounced free. This was a huge achievement for Lincoln, but unfortunately he was assassinated in 1865. The United States still had a long road ahead to create a tolerant society that treated black people with equality, and racism continued to be an epidemic. Even during the 20th century, black people faced discrimination and a policy of segregation forced them to sit in different seats in trains and buses and made it hard for them to find good jobs and succeed in society. It is important that we teach the future generation concern for others so that they respect all people whether they are rich or poor or black or white.
