Two Researchers from the Training and Energy Research Office Publish an International Scientific Study on Improving Gas Turbine Performance at Al-Quds Power Plant

Baghdad / Training and Energy Research Office – Media
Saturday, April 25, 2026

As part of the Ministry of Electricity’s efforts to support scientific research and enhance the efficiency of power generation systems, researchers Engineer Ali Kadhim and Dr. Mustafa Fouad published a scientific research paper in the international specialized journal ISRG Journal of Engineering and Technology, addressing the thermodynamic analysis of gas turbine performance at Al-Quds Power Plant.

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of Inlet Air Cooling Systems on the efficiency of gas turbines operating under hot climatic conditions, particularly during periods of increased electricity demand in Iraq’s summer season.

The research included an operational modeling analysis of a Frame 9E gas turbine unit with a generation capacity of 123 MW. The plant’s performance was analyzed based on the Brayton cycle, comparing conventional operating conditions with the application of inlet air cooling technologies, including evaporative cooling and fogging systems.

The results demonstrated that reducing the compressor inlet air temperature by 5°C can increase net power output by approximately 5–10%, in addition to improving thermal efficiency by about 2–5%, positively contributing to enhanced operational performance and reduced fuel consumption.

The study confirmed that upgrading existing gas power plants through the integration of inlet air cooling systems represents a technically and economically viable solution, contributing to improved reliability of electricity generation and supporting the sustainability of the national energy system under the Ministry of Electricity Iraq.

This scientific contribution aligns with the Training and Energy Research Office’s strategic direction toward supporting applied research and linking academic expertise with the practical operational needs of Iraq’s energy sector.
