एलिज़ाबेथ बाथोरी का जन्म 1560 में हंगरी के एक बेहद अमीर और शक्तिशाली शाही परिवार में हुआ था। उनकी शादी प्रसिद्ध सेनापति फेरेन्क नादास्दी से हुई। पति की मृत्यु के बाद एलिज़ाबेथ अपने विशाल महल और संपत्ति की अकेली मालकिन बन गई।

कुछ वर्षों बाद आसपास के गांवों में एक अजीब अफवाह फैलने लगी। कहा जाने लगा कि जो युवा लड़कियां काम करने के लिए उनके महल में जाती थीं, वे कभी वापस नहीं लौटती थीं।
