He can tell. Children can always tell. Presence was never about location, and you have been physically home and functionally elsewhere for so long that they have stopped expecting anything else.

For years there was a question at 8pm and an argument at 9. Then, at some point, both stopped. She plans the evening around your absence now, cleanly and without complaint, and you told yourself it was maturity settling in. It was not. It was someone completing the adjustment to your absence, and the quiet in that house is not peace, it is a decision that was made without you.

The parasympathetic branch does not announce its decline. There is no warning light. It simply requires a longer and longer signal to activate, until the signals available in an ordinary week are no longer long enough.

Not one. You know your skip-level's kids' names because it builds rapport. You could not name a single girl your daughter spends every day with. She stopped telling you things somewhere around the time she stopped asking, and you did not notice the handover happening because there was a release that quarter. There are three years left in that house. You are counting them now.

What is happening is a bias in a control system. Two branches, one dominant, and every year of always-on delivery weights the dominant one further. Eventually the correction signal is still being sent and no longer being received.

Two hundred people bring you their blockers. Your leadership brings you their anxiety. Your parents bring you their reports and your brother brings you his fees. Everything routes upward to you and terminates there, because above you is a time zone and beside you is nobody you can be honest with. You are the last node. There is no next hop.

The Recovery Core is a trainable capacity, not a default state. Most leaders assume it switches on the moment demand stops. It does, until roughly the point where it does not, and nobody is told when they cross that line.

The recognition slide went up and it was someone else's name. You clapped. You are far too senior to raise it, and you did not raise it. But something happened anyway, without a decision being made: that person now finds you slightly less available. Slightly slower to reply. A little harder to get time with. You would deny it if asked, and you would not be lying, you never chose it. It is what a system with nowhere to discharge does with a wound. It cannot let it go, so it stores it, and it pays it back somewhere you are not watching.

Consider what you would conclude if a plant ran at peak load for eleven years with no scheduled downtime. You would not call it resilient. You would call it overdue. The nervous system is not exempt from that arithmetic.

GCC Senior Managers:

The reorg was announced without ceremony. The platform you built from twelve people to two hundred now reports to someone eleven years younger, and you were told it was a great development opportunity for him. You said the right things in the town hall. And a question you have never had to ask before has started running quietly underneath everything: how much runway is actually left.

There is a difference between being tired and being unable to come down. Tired responds to sleep. This does not, because the mechanism that converts sleep into recovery is the same one that has been suppressed.
