"At Sri Govardhana there is a place called Danaghati where Sri Krsna engaged in a lover's quarrel with Sri Vrsabhanu-nandini Sri Radhika in order to extract some tax from Her. As soon as the rasika Vaisnavas see that place, an intense longing arises in their hearts to hear the narration of that quarrel. May that Sri Govardhana fulfil all my desires."

The gopis are expert in worship. They worship Krsna by their sidelong glances not by ghee-wicks. Ghee-wicks are only for the sadhaka. The gopis worship Him by their sidelong glances, and Krsna accepts those glances.

The gopis lament in separation from Krsna, "O, see the forest girls. They are born of very low caste, with black complexions. Although they are Pulinda, from the hilly tribes, still they are so fortunate. When Krsna goes to the forest, His footprints, mixed with some kunkuma powder, come on the grass. When the Pulinda girls see this, they take that kunkuma and smear it on their breasts. When they do this, they feel as if Krsna is meeting with them. But we cannot do even this."

A gopi who had recently moved to Nandagaon. She had heard about Krsna and she wanted to see Him. One day, Krsna was playing His flute and coming with millions of cows and calves and cowherd friends. He knew: "A new girl has come and she wants to see Me. Her mother-in-law did not allow her to leave the house." Her mother-in-law had told her, "Don't go, otherwise a black snake will bite you." That gopi had replied, "Then why are you going? I must go, even if you expel me from your house." She went out, Krsna touched her chin with His flute, and she became mad.

Lord Krsna said, "What Baladeva and Rohini-maiya said is true. My heart is made of a thunderbolt and is harder than a stone. Though I was hearing these topics from them My heart did not fully melt and I have not died. The Vrajavasis nourished Me so much, as the eyelid protects and nourishes the eye. They never did anything for themselves. All their activities were only for My happiness. They always pray to Lord Narayana and Govardhana, 'Please protect Krsna and give Him a long life.
Yogamaya arranges everything in Vraja, so she also arranged for Srimati Radharani to go every day from Yavat to Nandagaon to cook for Krsna. People greatly criticized Her at that time, but she tolerated this, just for the happiness of Krsna. They also criticized Mother Yasoda for allowing a girl to cook for her son, but she also tolerated this, just for the happiness of Krsna. No other example can be given to illustrate the prema of the Vrajavasis. The Vrajavasis are their own example.

I have heard a story about Jesus Christ. Once there were many persons assembled, and taking stones in their hands, they wanted to kill a guilty person. This person had a very bad character. He had been attracted to a lady, he caught hold of her, and he did some bad things. So, many persons were assembled and they wanted to kill him with the stones.

At that moment Jesus Christ came there and told them, "Oh, listen to me first. I want you to kill this person with your stones. I also have a stone, so we will all throw these stones at him together and kill him. But first hear me. Only those of you who are not guilty of the same crime are allowed to stone him. Whoever is personally guilty of any bad activities, whoever has done as this person has, may not do so." All of them stopped. No one there was pure in heart and free from the guilt of this same crime.

When Krsna left them during rasa-lila, they were thinking about His movements and and qualities. By such continuous thinking they became maddened and began to imitate Him. Each and every gopi thought, "I alone am Krsna, and all the gopis are all my beloveds."

In his Sri Ananda-vrndavana-campu, Srila Kavi Karnapura explains how it happened that each gopi thought herself to be Krsna and saw the others as Putana, Aghasura, or Bakasura. One's attachment is never directed to something in which one has no taste. One will only develop attachment and tadatma-bhava, feelings of oneness, to that which is favorable and in which one has taste. The gopis cannot be attached to Putana, and therefore, because Putana is unfavorable to the gopis' bhava, it is not possible for them to become unmada and feel oneness with her. They are only attached to Krsna's activities.

In re-enacting Putana-lila, it appears that one gopi threw down another, climbed upon her breast, and took the breast of that other gopi in her mouth. However, Srila Kavi Karnapura explains that where it seems that a gopi is lying down as Putana, that gopi is not present there. Because they will not accept the mood of Putana, those gopis acting as Putana and other demons were created artificially by Yogamaya. This is a very important truth to understand, and it is difficult to understand simply by reading the descriptions of this pastime in Srimad-Bhagavatam. When something unfavorable to the gopis is required in a lila, Yogamaya makes the arrangements. She is doing everything; She is helping them, and thus they are thinking, "I'm Krsna," "I'm Krsna," "I'm Krsna," and performing all the lilas.

When they heard Sri Krsna's flute-song and thus left their houses and husbands in the dead of night, the real gopis came to Him and Yogamaya expanded duplicate gopis to stand by the side of their husbands. This was likewise the case here. All the gopis who played the parts of Putana, Aghasura, Bakasura, Kaliya, and so on were imitations created by Yogamaya.

Srila Kavi Karnapura has revealed something else about this rasa-lila. When the gopis were imitating Krsna, He Himself had entered their hearts and was the actual performer of His own pastimes – as mentioned earlier with reference to the fire entering and acting through the iron in tadatma-bhava. The gopis were thinking, "We are doing this," but actually Krsna was acting. Here there was no action of Yogamaya. Krsna Himself was doing everything.

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Öhakura has made a similar point in this connection. When Krsna entered the gopi's hearts, His six opulences – aisvarya (wealth), virya (strength), yasasa (fame), Sri (beauty), jnana (knowledge), and vairagya (renunciation) – fully manifested in them. Because He was present there, everything was present there. Although they were merely imitating His pastimes, because He was present they had the power to lift Govardhana Hill and dance on the heads of Kaliya. If Govardhana were situated there, they could certainly have lifted him.

The reverse is also true. If the gopis are in Bhagavan Sri Krsna, He can act, otherwise He cannot. His abilities are the effect of the gopis' sakti, or power. They are His svarupa-sakti, and therefore whatever He does is actually done by them. Every quality and every power in Him is theirs. They don't reveal this, however, otherwise the pastimes cannot continue. Srimati Yasoda maiya can do every¬thing; the sakhas can kill millions of Kamsas, Aghasu¬ras, Bakasuras, and all others, but they do not exercise their power – and this is also true for the gopis.

When the demon Sankhacuda once abducted Srimati Radhika and the gopis, they began to cry. Why were they crying? This was nara-lila. If they wanted to exercise their power they could have done so. They have all qualities – everything that Krsna has. In fact, they have more than He has. They can defeat Him and they can control Him. Especially, Srimati Radhika is more beautiful than Him, and more powerful.

Once, pretending to be ill, Krsna told Narada, "I'm sick. I have a headache. If any devotees will give Me their foot-dust, only then will I be cured." Narada then went to see Rukmini and Satyabhama in Dvaraka and begged them, "Please give your foot dust." Puzzled, the Queens asked, "Why do you want our footdust?" Narada replied, "Krsna is sick. He has a headache. He has asked for the foot dust of His devotees. He will rub it here and there on His body, and He will thus be cured." The Queens asked, "Why don't you give your own foot dust? You are a high-class devotee, so you should give your own footdust. How can we give our footdust to Krsna, the Lord of lords? He is our husband. We cannot give our footdust to be placed on His head."

When Narada returned to Krsna, he repeated what the Queens had said, and Krsna replied, "I have no hope of being saved; I will die. But there is one thing that you can do. You can go to the gopis. Yes, fly to Vrndavana at once and ask the gopis if they can give their footdust."

Narada immediately left, and upon arriving in Vrndavana he saw the gopis and told them, "Krsna has a headache, and He will die at once if a remedy is not given to Him." The gopis asked him, "What do you want? What can we do?" Narada answered, "Krsna said that if any devotees can give the dust of their lotus feet, He will quickly be revived." Millions of gopis at once began to take the dust from their feet, and when there was no dust left, they collected dust from elsewhere. Now there was abundant dust, and they gave it to Narada. He asked them, "Aren't you afraid that you will go to hell?" The gopis replied, "If Krsna's headache is cured, we don't mind going to hell." Narada happily took that dust and returned to Dvaraka. Krsna then touched the dust and, rubbing the footdust of the gopis on His head, He instantly became cured.

What became of that dust? It is kept at a place known as gopi-talaw, the pond of the gopis. Even today, gopi-candan is collected from there, at that pond, and that is the clay we apply on our bodies as tilaka every day. We apply the gopis' footdust.

The gopis can give anything to Krsna, and they can do anything for Krsna. They can be naked for Him, or at other times, to please Him, they can stamp His head with the red color dye from their feet. No one else but the gopis can ever do this. The gopis alone can do everything, and this was one example of their high class of love.

Jatila told her daughter Kutila that she is unable to protect her daughter-in-law Srimati Radhika from Sri Krsna. Therefore, she decided to confine Her inside the house so that She would not be bitten by the eager glances of Sri Krsna.

Danistha came to Yavat to request that Srimati Radharani cook, because Krsna did not eat anything prepared by anyone else. Srimati Radhika would generally go to Nandagaon everyday to cook, but because Jatila now made Her stay in the house, she could not go. While Danistha was there, she whispered a secret into Lalita and Radhika's ear and then left. Visakha then came to Jatila crying and said a snake had bitten Srimati Radhika. Jatila sent Kutila to get Abhimanyu and a snake-bite doctor to come and chant special mantras to free Srimati Radhika from the snake poison. She herself then went to Paurnamasi and told her everything that had happened. Paurnamasi said she would help, and she took Jatila to see Gargi, the daughter of Garga Muni. She asked Gargi if she had learned the proper snake mantras from her father. Gargi replied that she had not, but fortunately her younger sister named Vidyavali had, and fortunately Vidyavali was now visiting Vraja from Kasi where she lived with her husband. Jatila begged Gargi to come to her home with Vidyavali to free Srimati Radhika from the deadly snake poison.

Meanwhile, Danistha and the other gopis who had pre-planned the events disguised Sri Krsna as Vidyavali. When "Vidyavali" arrived at the home of Srimati Radhika she told Jatila that in order to cure Jatila's daughter-in-law, she would need to chant mantras over Her body and also chew betel nut while chanting a special mantra on it, and then give it to Srimati Radhika to chew. Jatila agreed. Vidyavali sent everyone out of Srimati Radhika's room and pretended to have a conversation with the snake, and Sri Krsna Himself played the part of the snake. In the conversation that ensued between Vidyavali and the snake, Sri Krsna in the voice of the snake explained to Jatila that the dreadful incident was the result of a curse on her. If she would continue to keep Radharani from Her service at Nandagaon, no doctor would be able to reverse the power of the curse. In this way her son, who would be bitten by the snake on the very next day, and her daughter-in-law would both surely die. Hearing this from outside the door, Jatila quickly agreed to let Srimati Radharani go to Nandagaon everyday with no obstruction. In this way Sri Krsna and Srimati Radharani were able to meet, and the Divine Couple were both cured of the snake bite of separation.

Once Padma, the sakhi (cowherd girlfriend) of Candravali, came to Lalita and Visakha to glorify Candravali. She said, "Oh, my sakhi is so fortunate. Today she saw the beauty of the whole form of Krsna, top to bottom."

Lalita then said, "I'm very sorry to say that my sakhi is not so fortunate. If She sees Krsna's nose, She cannot move Her sight from there. If She is looking at His cheeks, then She becomes fixed on His cheeks. My sakhi has never seen Krsna fully." Padma then became ashamed, as the consciousness of Srimati Radhika is more glorious than that of Candravali.

If you are worshipping thousands of salagramas, Govardhana-silas and other silas, Sri Sri Radha and Krsna, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu, and you are doing book distribution and all other devotional activities but you have no taste in hari-katha this is compared to a tree without a trunk. That tree has been cut down, and still you are giving it water. There is no use in that.

Moreover, if you are hearing hari-katha but are not following the principles of bhakti, and yet you are thinking, "I will hear, but I will not follow," this is still more bogus. "Notpadayed yadi ratim srama eva hi kevalam."
