Now a team at Kyoto University have, by rummaging around in piles of waste, found a plastic munching microbe. After five years of searching through 250 samples, they isolated a bacteria that could live on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a common plastic used in bottles and clothing. They named the new species of bacteria Ideonella sakaiensis. The team also identified the enzymes that Ideonella sakaiensis uses to breakdown the PET and the bacterial gene that codes for the PET-digesting enzyme. They then were able to manufacture more of the enzyme and then demonstrate that PET could be broken down with the enzyme alone. This opens a whole new approach to plastic recycling and decontamination.

Coccidioimycosis is a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadaii, commonly known as "Valley Fever." It is endemic to parts of the Southwest U.S., from Texas to southern California, as well as northern Mexico, Central America and South America.

Micrococcus luteus colonies

M. luteus is an aerobe, which means that it thrives in an oxygen rich environment, and is normally found living in the human mouth, mucosal linings of the upper pharynx, and respiratory tract. Those who may be immunocompromised such a AIDS patients, or those on chemotherapy, need to be concerned about these bacteria, however, these organisms are usually considered non-pathogenic.
