Our youngest Oakridgers marked Independence Day with the kind of enthusiasm only they can bring: singing patriotic songs, dancing, sharing stories, and bringing the colours and spirit of India to life on stage.

For them, it was a day of performances, smiles, and proud little voices. For us, it was a beautiful reminder of where the story of citizenship begins: with knowing the stories of those who came before us, feeling a sense of belonging, and slowly discovering that we too have a part to play.

Today, they celebrated the India they know. Tomorrow, they will help shape the India they imagine.

Freedom is more than what we inherited. It is what we choose to do with it.

Today at Oakridge Visakhapatnam, our Independence Day celebration began with the hoisting of the National Flag. Students and teachers came together through patriotic songs, a beautiful rendition of Lehra Do, and a moving tribute to 150 years of Vande Mataram.

On stage, the story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj came alive through dance and storytelling, while a powerful theatrical portrayal of Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar brought us closer to the courage and sacrifice behind our freedom. Our students’ speeches added another dimension, inviting us to pause and think about what independence means to us today and what it asks of the generation that inherits it.

Together, these moments made the celebration more than a remembrance of the people and stories that brought us here. They reminded us that history does not end with remembrance.

Perhaps that is where education has its most important role: not simply in teaching young people about the past, but in giving them the knowledge, courage, and agency to decide what comes next.

Today, our Junior and Senior Prefects from the Primary and Secondary Years stepped into their roles at our Investiture Ceremony, taking on the responsibility of representing their peers and being an active part of the school community.

At Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam, we believe students should have a voice in the community they are part of, and leadership gives them the space to use it. It gives them the opportunity to listen, take initiative, bring ideas to the table, and have the confidence to turn those ideas into action.

That is what we hope to nurture through student leadership: young people who are not just prepared to lead, but are confident enough to speak up, thoughtful enough to listen, and ready to make a difference in the community around them.

And today, that journey begins for our new prefects.

Early Years learners at Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam stepped into sunshine, rain, and chilly weather — quite literally! Through outfits, conversations, and plenty of curiosity, they explored how different weather conditions look and feel.
