GITAM believes in promoting Psychology as related to life in its applied form. It is in this sense that GITAM hopes to advance Psychology as a human science in close relation with other human sciences like Philosophy, Sociology and Social Work. Application of psychological principles to solve human problems has acquired new
dimension with the changing nature of the challenges that the world faces today. In view of this, the scientific discipline of applied psychology has emerged as a natural process of evolution in the knowledge base and has gathered spectacular momentum in recent years. In this context, a post-graduate training in Applied Psychology has been a need of the hour and demands a comprehensive curriculum. For preparing the applied psychologists of the future, equipping them with skills and adequate knowledge-bases, an attempt has been made to incorporate professional training in three principal domains of the discipline as mentioned earlier. There is also a focus on understanding of the fundamental psychological processes, and research methods in applied psychology. The number of centres, offering professionally oriented post graduate courses in psychology being few, a need was felt to bring out Psychology out of its academic ivory tower as applied to various walks of life. It is necessary to once again make Psychology connect with the challenges and issues that plague human kind today. The course in Applied Psychology is envisaged as a step towards this direction. Applied Psychology is not a mere exercise in academics; nor is it simply showing the relevance of the traditional ideas in contemporary times. It is a vibrant field of study that is interdisciplinary, policy-driven, action-oriented and experimental in spirit. In the highly competitive world of today where people are striving for excellence in every field, stress and indulging in high risk behaviours like alcohol and drug abuse are the inevitable by-products. In this situation, the role of a psychologist as a counselor/motivator to help de-stress and motivate to reach one’s true potential becomes crucial in different fields, be it in sports, industries or education. Ashok, M.(Psy.), PhD (Psy.) Head of the Dept. of Applied Psychology, has 21 years of teaching experience in Organizational Behaviour and Communication. He has vast research experience on Cross- Cultural Dimensions of Work Life

Dr.Deepa Mohan, M.Phil, PhD (Clinical Psy.) from NIMHANS, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Dept. of Applied Psychology, has more than 25 years of Clinical experience in the area of mental health. Her interests include Neuropsychology, childhood disorders, Stress Management and HIV Counselling. Nalini, M.Phil &Ph.D (Psy.) has been a scholar of high repute. She has published several research papers in national and international journals and proceedings. Her areas of interest include Psychology as applied to Development and Environment. She teaches social and health psychology. Adinarayana, B.Tech, MBA, Ph.D, is a highly competent faculty in the area of Research Methodology and Statistical Techniques.

Department of Applied Psychology GIM activities from June.-Dec. 2015 at a glance
• On the occasion of World Su***de Prevention day on September 10th, the faculty and students of the Department of Applied Psychology conducted a seminar based on the theme given by the WHO "Preventing Su***de: Reaching Out and Saving Lives. This was followed by a group discussion.
• On the occasion of World Alzheimer's day on September 21st, the students of M. Sc. Applied Psychology presented a seminar on different aspects of Dementia and its psychological impact on the care givers.
• The theme for World Mental Health day, October 10 was “Dignity in Mental Health,” a topic that is fundamental to the provision of good mental health care. Students and faculty of the Department of Applied Psychology, GIM, GITAM University, actively participated in the seminar and a discussion. The topics taken up for presentation were domestic abuse, paranoid schizophrenia, post-partum depression, OCD, anxiety and yoga as a remediation for various psychological issues.
• Apart from the seminars and conferences, the faculty from the Department of Applied Psychology is invited to various schools in the city for career counseling workshops. The faculty also has a regular involvement in different forums as guest lecturers and invited keynote speakers on various topics ranging from personality development and stress management and emotional intelligence
• An article written by Dr. Deepa Mohan, HOD, Department of Applied Psychology, GIM, on the topic “Stress and how to handle it” has been published in the Red Magazine, June issue.
• A no. of students from M. Sc. Applied Psychology have cleared the NET and the SET (eligibility examination for lecturership) in the first attempt.
