Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was a huge advocate of education as the primary driving force of personal growth. He believed that it was knowledge that made a person great. Despite the range of titles he had earned in his lifetime, the visionary preferred to call himself a teacher. In a recent event at the Delhi Secretariat, in the presence of Delhi's Chief Minister, Dr Kalam claimed to be a teacher right from the start of his career.

Dr. Kalam believed that our education system requires certain reforms, both in terms of spirit and practicality of the knowledge imparted. In his speech at the Delhi Secretariat he emphasised on the inclusion of skill based education at the school level. At the event in Delhi Dr. Kalam said, "When the students pass out of senior secondary schools, they should have two certificates - of passing 10+2 examination and of a specific skill acquired by him during schooling,"

According to him, besides the normal curriculum the children should receive special training towards one skill set which will offer an extra certification which will not only help them get a job after school but also make them aware of the how real world industries function. To deal with the infrastructural costs he elucidated on mobile setup consisting of engineering labs on wheels which can cover multiple schools in a day.

The Bharat Ratna award winner believed in a different approach towards the issue of unemployment. He emphasised on a holistic view of the current employment scenario. On the 54th foundation day of IIT Bombay, Dr. Kalam stated, "In the present context, the education system has to be designed in a way that produces large number of employment generators and not just employment seekers."

According to him, the introduction of a particular skill set at a younger age will promote entrepreneurship in the country. This kind of education system will generate job creators instead of job seekers.

Life skills

Now, this is a problem with the whole world education system; no education system in the world teaches life skills to students. How to behave in public, what are a relationship and other social aspects of the life needs to be taught at the school and college level. When students go in the real world they need to take decisions which they are not familiar with. Indian parents don’t talk with teenagers, they are unaware of the day to day problems, situations of their children. They don’t understand their children world. Here, in this case, the education system in India needs to take initiative and introduce life skills at the school level.

Entrepreneurship:

The education system in India or anywhere in the world for that matter teaches how to be the employee; they never teach how to create jobs how to be an entrepreneur. In the 21st century, it is the need of time that we need to promote the entrepreneurship from the school level. And we need to take it to the next level when the students come to the higher education or a degree/ under graduate level. Now at the university level, it is been mandatory to have a start-up cell, e-cells but existing college facilities will not able to handle this because and entrepreneurship is completed different thing that teachers will never understand. The education system in India needs to tie-up with the actual businesses, startups, industry leaders to promote entrepreneurship in India.

Newer Technologies
Technology, the world around changes so fast and jobs too. Jobs which were big opportunities ten years back are absolute now. The education system should be in sync with the world and innovation. As these new technologies like AI, AR, Machine Learning, Chain Block, Bio-Technology, Brain Mapping, Quantum Physics, Nano Technology etc grew they need human resources to work on it. School, college still need to teach basics but along with that, they should at least give the glimpse of whats new happening in the world.

Exams, Marks, Percentage, Grades

In India, A student is measured with his or her academic grades or percentages. Lab experiments, practicals are there as part of the curriculum but they don’t have that much value in the education. Talent cannot be measured by marks so we need to have the different measurement system which can measure the talent, skills and hidden potential of the student. Every kid is special, they all have gifted but with a different gift, the education system should provoke thought process so that students know their inclination early in the process. But it might take a decade or two to change this mark and number based system in India. One of the major problems of the Indian education system is that it fails to understand that academics just one part of the student life, sports, life sciences, technology are the areas students should excel at. But in India, we just focus on the academic part, text books knowledge only. When these students go out in the real world with this text book knowledge they face a lot of problems
