214 delegates, including 104 postgraduate students and 110 ophthalmologists, came together at GIMSR for Glaucoma: Basics & Beyond, a comprehensive CME and hands on workshop focused on advancing glaucoma care and training.
Organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, GIMSR, in association with the Andhra Pradesh Ophthalmic Society (APOS) and Visakha Ophthalmic Association (VOA), the programme featured expert lectures, interactive discussions, and practical training sessions for participants from medical colleges and DNB institutes across Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
A major highlight of the event was the MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) Dry Lab, conducted for the first time in Andhra Pradesh, providing participants with the opportunity to observe and practice this advanced glaucoma procedure on simulator eyes. Postgraduate students also received hands on training in Lasers, OCT and Fundus Photography, UBM, and B Scan imaging. Expert sessions were delivered by renowned glaucoma specialists, including Dr. V. Prasanna, Glaucoma Consultant, Aravind Eye Hospital, Chennai, along with faculty from GIMSR and other institutions.
The CME was inaugurated by Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane, Pro Vice Chancellor, Medical Sciences, GIMSR, who emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and skill development for the next generation of ophthalmologists. The programme reflected GIMSR’s commitment to academic excellence, advanced clinical training, and providing access to state of the art ophthalmic infrastructure for learners and practitioners alike.

Strengthening research excellence through advanced faculty development.
GITAM Institute of Nursing successfully conducted its 4th Faculty Development Program on “From Writing to Publication of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis.” The workshop provided faculty members and researchers with comprehensive training in evidence synthesis, scientific writing, and publication strategies, helping strengthen their research capabilities.
The programme featured Dr. U. Praveen, Assistant Professor, College of Nursing, AIIMS Vijaypur, Jammu, as the resource person. Participants gained hands-on experience in literature searching, protocol development, data extraction, critical appraisal, PRISMA guidelines, manuscript preparation, and the systematic review and meta-analysis process.
The workshop was led by Dr. Venkatesan Balu, Principal, and coordinated by Mrs. Thota Malathi, Assistant Professor, and reflects GITAM Institute of Nursing's commitment to fostering high-quality research, evidence-based practice, and academic excellence.

Promoting environmental responsibility through community action and awareness.
The Department of Community Medicine, GIMSR, observed World Environment Day 2026 at the Urban Health Training Centre, Pedda Jalaripeta, and the Rural Health Training Centre, Modavalasa, with activities focused on environmental conservation and sustainable living. As part of the initiative, saplings were planted and nurtured within the campus premises, reinforcing the importance of green spaces and community participation in protecting the environment.
Awareness sessions were conducted for community members on climate change, plastic pollution, energy conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable practices. Participants were encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible habits and contribute towards building a cleaner and healthier future.
The programme concluded with a pledge to embrace eco friendly practices and support collective efforts towards a greener, healthier, and more sustainable world. Through such initiatives, GIMSR continues to promote public health beyond healthcare by fostering environmental awareness and community engagement.

82 residents benefited as GITAM Hospital launched its community healthcare outreach initiative for high rise gated communities in Visakhapatnam.
The first multi specialty medical camp was conducted at MVV Green Field, Sagar Nagar, bringing expert healthcare services closer to residents. Specialists from General Medicine, Orthopaedics, Physiotherapy, Paediatrics, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Dental Sciences provided consultations, health screening, and preventive care services.
The initiative is aimed at promoting early diagnosis, health awareness, and timely medical intervention while making quality healthcare more accessible within the community. Through such outreach programmes, GITAM Hospital continues to strengthen its commitment to preventive healthcare and community wellbeing.

Contributing to advancing pain management through academic engagement and skill-based learning.
Dr. Naga Sudha, Assistant Professor and Interventional Pain Physician, Department of Anaesthesiology, GIMSR, participated as faculty in the Neck Pain 360° CME and Live Ultrasound Scanning Workshop organized by the Vizag City Branch of the Indian Society for Study of Pain ISSP.
The programme brought together clinicians and pain specialists to discuss contemporary approaches to the evaluation and management of neck pain, with a special focus on ultrasound-guided pain interventions. The workshop provided an interactive platform for knowledge sharing, hands-on learning, and discussions on evidence-based pain management strategies.

Building strong research foundations for future clinician researchers.
The Department of Community Medicine successfully conducted a two-day hands-on workshop on “How to Write a Research Protocol” for first-year postgraduate students. The workshop focused on key aspects of protocol development, including framing research questions using PICO and PECO formats, literature search strategies, reference management through Zotero, methodology development, sample size calculation, and preparation of data analysis plans.
Designed as a practical learning experience, the workshop enabled participants to actively work on their own dissertation topics with guidance from faculty mentors. Interactive exercises and discussions helped students gain a deeper understanding of the essential components of a scientifically sound research protocol.
The programme reflects GIMSR’s commitment to strengthening research capacity among postgraduate students and fostering a culture of evidence-based inquiry and academic excellence.

International Clinical Trials Day 2026 was observed at GIMSR in collaboration with GITAM School of Pharmacy (GSP) to promote awareness of ethical clinical research and evidence-based medicine.
As part of the programme, a poster-making activity was organized on the theme “Patient First: Advancing Real World Evidence”. Students actively participated by presenting informative and creative posters highlighting various phases of clinical trials, including post-marketing surveillance and patient safety.
The initiative encouraged scientific thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and a deeper understanding of drug development and ethical research practices among future healthcare professionals.
