Efforts Needed to Prevent Loss of Life Due to Rip Currents: IG Gopinath Jatti
Research institutions and government agencies should work together to identify rip currents and prevent loss of life, said IG Gopinath Jatti while inaugurating the one-day National Conference on Strategies for Coastal Safety and Rip Current Management at Andhra University on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need for innovation, continuous monitoring, and public awareness to reduce casualties. He noted that while 69 deaths due to rip currents were reported in 2023, the number came down to 39 in 2024. However, around 45–50 people lose their lives annually due to rip currents in the state. He advised people to avoid entering hazardous coastal areas and said warning signboards are being installed at vulnerable locations.
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.P. Rajasekhar emphasized the importance of socially relevant research and called for better awareness, improved warning systems, and coordination between technology and policy measures.
ISRO scientist S.V.V. Arun Kumar said public awareness about rip currents remains low. He explained that AI technology is being used to identify rip currents and support measures to prevent loss of life.
Science College Principal Prof. M.V.R. Raju stressed the need to improve public awareness and preparedness, while Head of the Department Prof. C.V. Naidu outlined ongoing research efforts and plans for collaboration with various organizations.
Coastal Security Police SP K. Sravani and others also spoke.

AU Students File Patent for Groundbreaking Migraine Diagnostic Kit!
Did you know that millions mistake migraines for regular headaches, relying on painkillers until the condition worsens? Because there are currently no proper lab tests for migraines, doctors usually have to rely on physical symptoms alone.
Change is coming, straight from the labs of Andhra University!
Two teams of our brilliant M.Sc. Zoology students have successfully developed and tested a new In-Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) kit that can confirm a migraine using simple blood and urine samples!
The Breakthrough Journey:
• The Guide: Led by Emeritus Prof. B. Bharathalakshmi in collaboration with Dr. Ravikiran Yedidi, founder of TCABSE Laboratories (an exciting startup incubating on the AU campus!).
• The Discovery: AU students mapped out specific biomarkers. By analyzing patient samples using advanced laboratory techniques, they successfully pinpointed clear inflammatory biomarkers and neurotransmitter patterns unique to migraine sufferers.
• The Milestone: A patent application has officially been filed through the AU IPR cell!
The team is now expanding partnerships with local hospitals for larger clinical trials before launching this lifesaving diagnostic tool into the market. Huge congratulations to our student researchers for paving the way in medical science!
