Abstraction as Inquiry: Reimagining Proportion in Architectural Learning
This book documents an exploratory exercise undertaken by 2nd semester B.Arch students at the GITAM School of Architecture, Visakhapatnam. Emerging from the course Theory of Architecture, the exercise rethinks how we engage with proportion and scale in the Indian context, not as fixed rules, but as relationships between space, structure, culture, and meaning.
Through observation, analysis, and abstraction, students translated historic architectural works into abstract visual compositions that capture their underlying essence rather than their literal form. What makes this particularly meaningful is the shift in pedagogy it represents—from learning architecture as information to experiencing it as inquiry and interpretation.
