Dear Achariya Amma and Appa
This is the ‘let’s have fun’ time of the year. With the exams just over and the holidays fast approaching, kids are in a celebratory mood. While this is the best time to go on a holiday and to have fun together, the annual vacation also brings a great opportunity to bond with your little child and help them learn new things.
Given that in the last one year, your child spent more time with us than at home, we rightfully assume that we know more than you about the child in your child. Here are a few tips from us to keep alive the joyfulness, curiosity and excitement in the child during the holidays, as it was at school.
1. Spend time with your child. Look into your child’s eyes, listen more than you speak. Your child is growing in more ways than you have seen. Take time to realize it.
2. Make opportunities to sit as a family and eat with your little one. Make sure that they respect and enjoy food; all food, not just their favourite ones.
3. Hold your child’s hand and go for a walk. Help them see and appreciate the little wonders nature has in store for us at every corner of the road.
4. Engage your child in a conversation… Speak their language… Speak about their favourite cartoon character, about the best friend in school, about their play mate next door… Let them see you as a part of their world.
5. Explain to your child a little about what you do. They are smarter than you think they are, they understand. Tell them about your work, about your future plans for the family. Let them understand and respect your efforts in giving them a good life.
6. Introduce healthy hobbies to your child. Let them stop playing with your mobile phones and tabs and discover much more interesting and worthwhile things to do. Buy them something to read … it can even be a comic book; just that it has to interest the child
7. Encourage your child to learn 5 new English Words a day and let them use them in their conversation.
8. Let them meet new people and make new friends. Encourage them to visit ‘the never spoken to’ families in the street and make friends in them. The real fun in life lies in meeting new people and knowing new things.
9. Allow the children to help in the day to day chores at home. Let them help you in cleaning the house or watering the plants… let them know that no work is mean work.
10. Hold your little child in your arms and Thank God for giving you such a wonderful gift. There are many gifts in our life that we take for granted. Our children should not be one among them.
This holiday season, let your little one discover and rediscover the child in him, in her. In the process, you will discover the parent in you too. Wishing you happy parenting…
