Raising Concerns (beyond Heritage) -
Bijapur City is blessed with numerous historic and ancient bawdis (stepwells/Kalyanis) built during, before and after Adil Shahi era. But SADLY, most of these Stepwells are in BAD CONDITION. Some unused, some emcroached upon, some falling apart, some under demolition. But SURPRISINGLY, not a single one of these BAWDIS is Dry! All BAWDIS have water in it 👌
One such Heritage Bawdi is the SURANG BAWDI, located near Hotel Town Palace, Athani Road.
With the kind support of Government of Karnataka, Vijayapura District Administration (DC sir), Vijayapur Urban Development Authority (VUDA), Vijayapura Municipal Corporation, and Social Organisation of the City, the Bawdi is getting cleaned on 18 August 2024.
After Cleaning, removal of all the trees-weeds, putting a safety fence around the well, the ancient monument will come back to its glory, and be useful to people around.

The Campaign is lead be Karnataka Jal Biradari- Vijayapura Division (an organisation dedicated to water conservation in the State)
*There are hundreds of such Bawdis in Bijapur, and in thebera of climate change, they can become our Lifeline if cleaned and used!
