ARC’s joint-ownership model involves parents as co-owners, ensuring their loved one’s lifelong right of abode. This is a group home in Vellore, Tamilnadu catering to 6 people with Autism. Our philosophy is to provide respite and support for parents who wish for their child to experience and achieve independent living in a safe and happy environment. The facility consists of 4 flats with independen

t bedrooms for each child with their own bathroom. Various activities make up the day with specialists (occupational therapist and special educators) assisting in engagement and learning activities and care givers for assisting in daily living skills. Specialist digital and equipment and tools are available for the person with autism to learn new communication techniques. We will provide different levels of care and support to reflect the needs of the individual. Our primary goal is to create a continuous learning environment, in which the person with autism can express themselves freely and live with dignity in a safe and healthy environment. Meet Dr Vikram Rajan, Developmental Paediatrician.

Dr Vikram diagnosed Sharan with autism in 1999, when he was just 15 months old in Nagpur. I met him again today at his clinic and, remarkably, he recognised me immediately after 27 years!!

Dr Vikram has had a profound impact on our autism journey. Back then, within minutes of walking into his clinic, he told us clearly that Sharan was autistic — a moment that became pivotal in my acceptance and understanding of Sharan’s autism.

He also told us there was no known cure and that we would have to learn to “deal” with autism across Sharan’s life course.

That direct and honest approach has stayed with me over the years and, in many ways, helped shape my purpose as we dealt with acceptance.

I talk about this approach whenever I get a chance, yet recognising the value of a comprehensive assessment and the need to provide hope and reassurance to parents facing a new diagnosis.
