We are immensely proud of Kunvar Thaman (B.E. EEE + M.Sc. Biological Sciences, Class of 2022, Pilani Campus) — whose solo-authored research paper has been accepted at ICML 2026, one of the world's most prestigious AI research conferences, to be held in Seoul, South Korea.

Solo-authored papers at ICML are extraordinarily rare. This appears to be the first solo-authored ICML paper from India in the past three years.

Kunvar's paper, Reward Hacking Benchmark, tackles a critical challenge in AI safety: what happens when AI systems find ways to appear successful without actually doing the work? His research introduces a rigorous benchmark to detect this behaviour and evaluates it across 13 leading AI models — including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and DeepSeek.

The findings reveal that this shortcut-taking behaviour is deeply tied to how a model is trained, can be meaningfully reduced through simple environmental changes, and tends to emerge most when tasks get hard enough that honest solutions are elusive.

This is exactly the kind of foundational work that shapes how safe and reliable AI systems are built. We couldn't be more proud, Kunvar.
