Ahmedabad: Medical students in colleges affiliated to Gujarat University (GU) in Ahmedabad were shocked to receive the news of a state entrance test for post-graduate courses.

GU authorities have scheduled the test on March 30, which is barely 10 days from the date of notification. Another reason for shock is that GU is holding an entrance test despite the National Eligibility cm Entrance Test (NEET) that students were supposed to give, in absence of the state test.

“There was a provision of a submission to be made in the Supreme Court if a university in India wanted to conduct an entrance exam by itself and not let students give NEET. Universities needed to do this by January 7, 2013. But GU did not make any representation so, we were relaxed. Suddenly, news of GU’s entrance exam reached us which says that we have 10 days to prepare three years’ syllabus,” said one of the students requesting anonymity.

Students presented the issue to pro-vice chancellor, Dr Mukul Shah. They said that the judgment on NEET in SC is to come out on April 2 and they want GU to wait till the decision is out. They also conveyed their distrust in the varsity’s entrance exam alleging that doctors’ children are favoured and given seats easily. They insist on appearing for NEET which they consider a transparent system for admission.

Shah responded that they have postponed the decision to hold GU’s entrance test to April 28.
