A Tribute to Dr. Iravati

Dr. Iravati, a distinguished scholar and teacher of Vasanta College for Women, specialized in the field of ancient Indian theatre. Over her long and dedicated career, she wrote several research articles published in reputed journals. Many of her plays were staged and widely appreciated, the latest being "Moko Kahan Dhundhe Re Bande", based on the life of the saint-poet Kabir. For her outstanding contribution to the histrionic arts, she was honoured by Sanskar Bharati.

As Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology at Vasanta College for Women, Dr. Iravati inspired generations of students with her deep insight and creative energy. She retired from the college in 2014.
Among her notable publications are;
Rajghat: A Glade of Wisdom and Beauty and Performing Artistes in Ancient India. Both works reflect her rich understanding of ancient Varanasi’s artistic and cultural heritage, especially the Rajghat site.

Dr. Iravati was also an influential presence in the local theatre community.
She wrote and directed several plays featuring all-female casts, helping shape a distinctive theatrical movement in Varanasi that celebrated women’s voices and artistic expression.

In one of her plays, Dr. Iravati movingly portrayed the relationship between Annie Besant and J. Krishnamurti through an imagined conversation set during Krishnamurti’s visit to Besant on her deathbed in 1932:

𝘼𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩: “𝙆𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙣𝙖, 𝙢𝙮 𝙨𝙤𝙣, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚? 𝙒𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙪𝙥 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜.”

Dr. Iravati left us too soon, in March 2016, but her work continues to illuminate the artistic and cultural life of Varanasi and beyond.

Retrospect

A few years ago, I came across an old postcard in an antique shop. This postcard was addressed to a certain Sudha Modwel and had been sent by the Principal of Vasanta College.

When I looked into the background of Ms. Sudha, I came to know that she had been a teacher at Central Hindu Girls School and perhaps later became its Principal. After her passing, it seems that some of her belongings were sold off. Among those items was an album from Rajghat that contained many old photographs. Unfortunately,
I could not acquire that album, though a few of its pictures had been photographed and shared by me.

The postcard itself did come into my possession, but at present I am not able to locate it in the house.

This postcard bore the signature of the then Principal of Vasanta College, Shubhatai Ji.

𝙆𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙞

Dr. Sanghamitra Gadekar, lovingly known as Uma didi, spent a considerable part of her life in Varanasi. Dr. Gadekar completed her high school here, then moved to Anugul (Odisha), and later pursued her MBBS at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata. She did her internship at Kabeer Chaura and served in the Uttar Pradesh Health Services at Gyanpur.

After a long interval, she returned as a lecturer in Nutrition at Vasanta College for Women and also served as the Superintendent of Sanjivani Hospital in Sarai Muhana (Rajghat)

On the 24th of August, she would have turned 77. To honor her memory, all of us—her friends and family—will gather at Assi Ghat on 24th August at 10:30 a.m. for an interfaith prayer, after which her remains will be immersed in the Ganga.
