Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly found in some sugar-free chewing gums, candies and other products.

Research has reported an association between higher xylitol levels and cardiovascular risk and found evidence that xylitol can increase platelet activity. Importantly, this research does not by itself prove that ordinary xylitol consumption causes heart attacks, so the finding should be communicated with that qualification.

🐢 And here’s something every dog owner should know:
Xylitol can be extremely toxic to dogs. It can cause a rapid, dangerous fall in blood sugar and, in severe cases, seizures, liver failure and even death. If a dog accidentally consumes a xylitol-containing product, the FDA advises contacting a veterinarian or emergency animal clinic immediately.

This is why learning should extend beyond textbooks.

Encourage students to read labels, ask questions, understand what they consume and remain curious about the science around them.
