Before a child understands mathematics, they need to understand the world around them.

Full and empty is not just a concept. It is one of the earliest mathematical foundations a child's brain builds. Understanding volume, quantity and comparison at this age directly prepares children for number sense, measurement and logical thinking later in school.

Standing on one leg sounds simple. For a developing child it is one of the most complex things their body can do.

When a child kicks a ball from a single foot it simultaneously trains balance, eye foot coordination, spatial targeting and core stability in one single movement.

What most parents do not know is that single leg balance is a direct indicator of neurological maturity. Children who develop this early show better athletic performance, stronger posture and sharper focus in the classroom. Because the same brain region that controls balance also governs attention.

At first glance, it may look like a simple cotton-sticking activity on a little rabbit.

But at MCPS, we see much more than that.
Look closely at those little hands — holding the brush with confidence, applying the glue, picking up the cotton, placing it carefully and completing the activity with growing independence.

Through meaningful hands-on experiences, children gradually develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, confidence, creativity and independence — skills that become the foundation for future learning.
