It Could Happen to Us: What Denise Prudhomme’s Death Tells Us About Workplace Disconnect 07/11/2024

Denise Prudhomme's death at her workstation has been extremely disturbing. It says so much about us..and can happen to any of us...

"When Denise’s coworkers noticed the smell, rather than taking it seriously, they opted for the easy route — ignoring it. This kind of dismissive attitude shows how desensitized we’ve become. We’re constantly bombarded with stimuli, and anything uncomfortable or out of the ordinary can easily get swept under the rug. It’s like we’re in this loop of tuning out anything that disrupts our routine, even if it’s a cry for help."

The Dark Side of AI Companionship: Lessons from Sewell Setzer’s Tragic Story 29/10/2024

Sewell Setzer III, a 14-year-old from Florida, tragically took his life after developing a deep emotional attachment to an AI chatbot named Daenerys Targaryen, modelled after a character from Game of Thrones. Over several months, Sewell engaged in frequent conversations with the chatbot on Character.AI, often sharing his thoughts and feelings.

This heartbreaking story of Sewell Setzer III is a reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the AI surface. Sewell's experience highlights how easily we can become isolated, turning to technology for comfort when we should be reaching out to real people. We need to demand transparency from these AI systems—understanding how they operate and ensuring they truly grasp our emotions. It’s crucial that we prioritize genuine human connections in our lives, especially during tough times.

Technology should be a source of healing and connection, not a barrier that deepens our loneliness. As we process this disruptive landscape, we need to remember that we deserve a future where AI enhances our lives meaningfully rather than isolating us further.

The Global Implications of Sweden’s Early Education Reform 07/10/2024

Recently read about Sweden's decision to shift the starting age for formal education from seven to six years. To me, this reflects a significant change in its educational philosophy, moving away from a historically play-based model. This policy aims to address 'declining academic performance' but raises concerns about its impact on child development, educational quality, and social equity.
"Cultural hegemony plays a critical role in shaping the discourse surrounding educational reforms. The prevailing belief that earlier formal education leads to improved academic outcomes is often uncritically accepted, sidelining alternative perspectives that advocate for child-centred learning rooted in cultural responsiveness. This dominance can marginalize voices advocating for inclusive practices, particularly those from Indigenous or non-Western backgrounds whose educational philosophies may differ significantly from Eurocentric models.

The global implications of these dynamics are significant. As countries adopt similar reforms influenced by Sweden’s decision, there is a risk of perpetuating a homogenized educational model that fails to account for local contexts and diverse cultural perspectives"

Centering Humanity in Generative AI 12/08/2024

Drawing cultural lines / towards a human-first approach to tech

"Recentering human dignity, inclusive participation, transparency, accountability, and empowerment provides a path forward to steer generative AI away from dehumanization risks. The future of generative AI remains unwritten — if we have the courage to collectively write it in a way that uplifts humanity rather than diminishes us. This will require bold action to democratize access, open development processes to diverse stakeholders, and enact robust ethical safeguards. But by embracing a human-centric vision for these technologies, we can still seize the opportunity to create a future where generative AI enhances rather than replaces human creativity and agency. The choice is ours — to passively accept dehumanizing outcomes, or to actively write a future where generative AI serves as a collaborative tool for empowering people. The stakes are high, but so is the potential if we act with wisdom and urgency."

Curatorial Practice : Research and Storytelling 20/05/2024

Finally releasing the blog for the Curatorial Practice : Research & Storytelling workshop at the Department of Art History Faculty of Fine Arts , Baroda. I aimed to challenge the traditional separation between theory and practice in curatorial education. By emphasizing praxis, we positioned curation as a dynamic, interactive process that requires critical thinking, creativity, and meaningful engagement with art, history, and cultural narratives.
---
"The workshop departed from traditional exhibition practices, emphasizing the analysis of second-year Masters students' dissertations using art historical research tools. Through activities like mind mapping and narrative creation, students explored the complexities of curatorial practice, intertextuality between words and images, and audience interpretation. The workshop culminated in an open exhibition showcasing students' curated shows, highlighting innovative approaches to art historical research and exhibition design.
Students engaged in activities to create new, unexplored narratives using archival materials. The concept of intertextuality between words and images was highlighted, underscoring the importance of considering how audiences interpret these relationships. The participating students were urged to understand audience expectations, considering how viewers interpret text and image relationships. The workshop addressed challenges faced by curators, such as the limits of representation and the balance between representing artists and maintaining curatorial integrity. These were in general the key aspects of the workshop."

Things got so busy after Ahmedabad Design Week 5.0 this year, this is a .

This year the Department of Communication Design at UID Ahmedabad put up 3 large typography led installations at ADW 5.0. Prof Mahendra Patel's engagement with our department has led to a renewed interest in typography in the department and our students and faculty are looking to explore, experiment and play with typography and type design. We at the department recognise its importance in the ecosystem of visual communication and communication design.
A special shoutout to Karamu Majhi for working with our student team to ensure that all the installations came up in less than 3 days. Thank you to Col Surojit Bose for always encouraging us to push our limits, and a special thanks to Shivendra Shrivastava, without his support this would not be possible.

I recently had the privilege of curating a weeklong workshop, titled 'Curatorial Practice: Research and Storytelling,' held in The Department of Art History and Aesthetics at The Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. The workshop focused on exploring the connections between facts and storytelling through the lens of prominent figures like Giovanni Morelli, Donald Preziosi, and Sherlock Holmes.
Working with a group of junior 'curators,' we delved into the world of dissertations, using design thinking tools to understand, characterize, and tell compelling stories about diverse topics such as the Syncretism in Solanki Architecture,' 'The new Goan identity in Contemporary Goan Art,' Visual Culture of the Meiteis in Contemporary Imphal, Performance and Desire through Food represented in Mughal art and many more.
Throughout the workshop, we explored how the curatorial approach can be seen as an art historical methodology, peeling the layers of meaning in images and narratives. We discussed different curatorial approaches, experimented with creating narratives, and even curated an exhibition showcasing the mind maps and conceptual ideas developed by the participants.
I'm thrilled to have been a part of this journey, witnessing the growth and creativity of the participants as they brought their dissertations to life through the curatorial process. It was a true celebration of research, storytelling, and the power of .
A heartfelt thank you to all the students who participated, collaborated, and made this workshop a success. I'm grateful for the opportunity to curate a pedagogy for curation and contribute to the world of art history and aesthetics.

Special thanks to Jayaram Poduval sir, RITA SODHA and Ravi Bhai, for making things possible. This workshop would not be possible without the support of the Faculty of Fine Arts Alumni Association.
It is always a pleasure to be at the Department of Art History and Aesthetics Baroda and spend with Amitabha Adhikari, Dr.APARNA ROY BALIGA. It is a motivation to see so much hard work still happening to keep the flame alive.

With so many things happening, this is a .

Monika Bijlani and I were invited by Amit Pasricha to conceptualise and create a 'History of Indian Temple Architecture' for the India Art, Architecture & Design Biennale at the Red Fort, New Delhi.

Temple Architecture Through the Ages is a large-format panel that transcends the boundaries between an infographic and an artwork, presenting multiple layers of architectural history and regional styles. Painstakingly crafted with a montage of illustrations and images, this immersive experience takes viewers on a captivating journey through the historical narrative of India's temple architecture, offering a comprehensive exploration of its rich heritage. In this extraordinary artwork, Art History and Design converge to unveil a tapestry of diverse architectural styles, spiritually significant elements, and intricate artistic details. It showcases the regional variations and influences that have shaped these magnificent architectural marvels over the centuries.
Through this visually engaging representation, Temple Architecture Through the Ages not only celebrates the grandeur and beauty of these structures but also provides insights into the historical and cultural contexts in which they were built. It showcases the remarkable diversity and evolution of temple architecture, highlighting the enduring significance of these sacred spaces.

The concept and design are the vision of Rahul Bhattarya and Monica Bijlani. The dedicated research and ex*****on were carried out by Nayantara Mukherjee and Juie Shinde as project assistants, ensuring a meticulous portrayal of the intricacies and nuances of temple architecture across different regions of India.
