When we look at growth of industry in country and aspiring to be part of global supply chain, we must recognize and work on improving the prevalent low levels of competencies in Indian industrial workforce. Businesses invest into the training of the new workforce though they come from industrial technical institutes because of their extreme low competencies. Formal Training or Education
Several studies have reiterated that only 2% of Indian workforce is formally skilled. Most of current workforce does not get any formal training on even basic industrial activities and processes. Present education system also does not help workforce in applying the knowledge to work. Skill Upgradation and Cross-skilling
Once employed, there is no formal mechanism existing to enhance the skills of the workforce. This leads to stagnancy in the competency levels of the workers after employment and with constant changes in technology, machines, processes and automation. These workers at some point become liabilities on the businesses and they themselves also become highly vulnerable situation as the slightest change in competency can cause unemployment for this segment of unskilled workforce. Low Apprenticeship Opportunities
There is little appreciation of the apprenticeship system in the country. Earlier rules of compulsory apprenticeship by putting ITI graduates for one year, made the matter worse. As a result there is no mechanism for the youth to gain valuable work experience by either formal apprenticeship or internship. Ability to Pay for Training
Ability to pay for formal private industrial training is low, and also it is assumed that any work related education or training is to be given by the employer itself. This translates into no youth investing into focused industrial training. Workers focus is on instant gratification – a quick start of income owing to poor economic conditions. Trainee dropouts midway are seen even if training programs are sponsored and free, if they get an opportunity to start earning even on a lower scale. Contribution of SkillTelligent
