The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi, celebrated Gandhi Jayanti & Shastri Jayanti through its Gandhian Study Centre. The programme began with Ramdhun Bhajans and interfaith prayer rendition by our students.
The Gandhi Jayanti Lecture was delivered by Mr. O. R. Prakash, Reader, Government College of Teachers Education, Mangalore.

"Today, October 2nd, marks a significant day as we observe Gandhi Jayanti on Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary, that is commemorated as the International Day of Non-Violence. We also honor former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 122nd birth anniversary. He was deeply inspired by Gandhi and followed the Gandhian values.
Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to truth, non-violence, and Sarvodaya paired with Shastri’s iconic call of 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan', reminding us of unity, courage, and simplicity, continue to guide and inspire our nation today. Their words, actions, and teachings guide us by instilling values in us." 🇮🇳

REPORT OF THE EVENT

*Gandhi Jayanti and Shastri Jayanti Celebrated at MGM College, Udupi*

Udupi: While the world frequently reflects on Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership during India’s freedom movement, equal attention must be given to his transformative years in South Africa, where a young Gandhi matured into a visionary leader whose principles remain timeless models for youth today. This view was expressed by Sri O. R. Prakash, Reader at the Government College of Teacher Education, Mangalore.
Delivering the Gandhi Jayanti Lecture - 2026 at the joint celebration of Gandhi Jayanti and Shastri Jayanti, organized under the auspices of the Gandhian Study Centre at MGM College, Sri Prakash emphasized that Gandhi demonstrated how legal practice, journalism, social service, community organizing, and humanitarian movements should function. Enriching his talk with several compelling anecdotes of cases handled by Gandhiji, the chief guest highlighted how the 23-year-old Lawyer resolved disputes through ethical conciliation to spare clients from unnecessary burdens. He organized the Indian diaspora against discrimination and indentured labour system. He became the strong support for their collective voice, founded the method of Satyagraha, and published his paper 'Indian Opinion' in four languages including Tamil. The Chief Guest gifted the books authored by him to the College Library. One book is on Gandhi in South Africa. He handed over the books to the Principal.

Speaking on the life and principles of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Vice Principal Dr. Vishwanath Pai M shared two examples from Shastriji's life, illustrating how his simplicity, integrity, and values must serve as a guiding light across all walks of life, including the present day politics.

Dr. Devidas S. Naik, Principal of MGM Evening College, spoke on the enduring significance and relevance of Gandhian philosophy in contemporary society.

Smt. Malathi Devi, Principal of MGM PU College, shared her reflections on the inspirational lives and values of Gandhiji and Shastriji

In her presidential remarks, Principal Dr. Gayatri G. Pai urged the student community to deeply understand and internalize the core values championed by both Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. She called upon the students and faculty to actively adopt and practice the essential lessons of cleanliness in the campus and in their daily lives.

The event commenced with a rendition of Gandhiji’s favorite bhajans by students under the guidance of Dr. Vasumathi Bhat, Head of the Department of Sanskrit and Convener, Fine Arts Club.

Vinith Rao, Coordinator of the Gandhian Study Centre, delivered the introductory remarks, welcomed the gathering, and proposed the vote of thanks. Suchith Kotian, Head of the Department of Journalism, compered the program.

Today is the150th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, great Freedom fighter, the Unifier of India, the first Deputy Prime Minister and the first Home Minister of India, who was popularly known as the 'Iron Man of India'.
We are observing this day as the National Unity Day / Rashtriya Ekta Diwas and we offer our respectful tributes and homage to Sardar Patel.

Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations at MGM College, Udupi.
We offered our tributes to Mahatma Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastriji on their Jayanti. Students of our College rendered the soulful melodies of Ramdhun, Bhajans, and Prayers signifying Sarvadharma Samabhava. Dr. Vasumati Bhat, HoD, Sanskrit guided the students for Bhajans.

Floral Tributes were offered to Gandhiji and Shastriji by the dignitaries.

Dr. Rajendra K, Head, Department of Sociology, Dr. G. Shankar Government First Grade College for Women, Ajjarakadu, Udupi, was the Chief Guest and the resource person. He delivered the Gandhi Jayanti Lecture 2025 and spoke on the life and message of Gandhiji and Shastriji. He narrated various instances from Gandhiji's life and explained how they are moral lessons for us. He also explained social thoughts of Gandhiji and the role of Shastriji in the freedom movement. He distributed the prizes to the winners of Gandhi Jayanti Competitions 2025.

Prof. Vanita Maiya, Principal, MGM College, delivered the presidential remarks and stressed upon the need of incorporating the principles of Gandhiji and Shastriji into our educational system.

Dr. Vishwanatha Pai M, Vice Principal, MGM College, spoke on the relevance of Gandhiji and Shastriji in the contemporary and future situations. He mentioned the contributions of Lal Bahadur Shastri to the empowerment of our country.

Dr. Devidas S Naik, Principal, MGM Evening College, explained the multifaceted excellence of Gandhiji and greatness of Shastriji's simplicity.

Prof. Malathi Devi A, Principal, MGM PU College, spoke on the significance of celebrating Gandhi and Shastri Jayanti.

Mr. Vinith Rao, in-charge of Gandhian Study Centre, welcomed and also rendered the vote of thanks.

Mr. Suchit Kotian, HoD, Journalism, compered the programme.

Mr. Kishore H.V., Librarian, Mr. Vidyanath K, HoD, Political Science, helped in the successful organization of the programme. All the teaching and non teaching staff members, selected students, SWC members, Student volunteers were present.

ಇಂದು ನಾವು ಗಾಂಧಿ ಜಯಂತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಲಾಲ್ ಬಹಾದ್ದೂರ್ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಯವರ ಜನ್ಮದಿನವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಜಿ ಅವರುಗಳ ಜೀವನವೇ ಬಹಳ ಪ್ರೇರಣಾದಾಯಕವಾದ ಪಾಠಗಳಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆ ಉತ್ತಮ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಈ ದಿನ ನಾವು ಅವರು ತೋರಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಅಹಿಂಸೆ, ಸತ್ಯ, ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆ, ಧೈರ್ಯ, ಸ್ವದೇಶಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಸರ್ವೋದಯವನ್ನು ಧ್ಯೇಯವಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಅನುಸರಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಜಿ ಅವರುಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾವು ಪ್ರಣಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯ ಸಂದೇಶಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಜಿಯ ಸಂದೇಶಗಳು ಇಂದು ನಮಗೆ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ, ಹಾಗೂ ಅಂತಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವೆನಿಸಿ ಎಂತಹ ಕಠಿಣ ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೂಡಾ ಎದುರಿಸುವ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸದ್ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ನಮಗೆ ದಾರಿದೀಪ.
ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದಿನ ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಕಾಲೇಜನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಯವರ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಇರಿಸಿ ಸಾರ್ಥಕವಾದ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಸ್ಮಾರಕವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ದೇಗುಲವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಡಾ. ಟಿ.ಎಂ.ಎ ಪೈ ಅವರಿಗೂ‌ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಯ ನಮನಗಳನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

This year the auspicious occasions of Vijaya Dashami and Madhwa Jayanti have come on 2nd October.
ಈ ವರ್ಷ ವಿಜಯ ದಶಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ವ ಜಯಂತಿ ಕೂಡಾ ಇದೇ ದಿನದಂದು ಬಂದಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಹಲವು ಮೌಲಿಕವಾದ ಸಂದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಈ ದಿನವು ಸಾರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಒಳಿತಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.
