Adiudupi School- Progressive Path of 120 years

Adiudupi School has a history of 120 years. In the latter part of 19th century when the new education system introduced by the British was gaining ground in many parts of the country, there were no schools in the western Udupi covering Malpe, Kodavoor, Puttur, Ambalpady, Bannanje, Moodanidamboor and the surrounding areas. Then a group of philanthropists led by late Sri Ramachandrayya took the initiative and started Adiudupi School in 1896.

Humble Beginning:

The School was initially started in a single room thatched roof accommodation. It was a real struggle in the beginning years, not only for garnering funds to meet the day today expenses but it was quite an effort to convince the people to send their children to school. Under these difficult situations, the management changed hands many times and ultimately Sri T Seetharamaiah took over the mantle in April 1906.

Sri Seetharamaiah, a great visionary and a committed educationist, continued the struggle and did not give up even when the circumstances were going out of control. With the help of local Volunteers and Samaritans he was successful in adding stone by stone and developing the basic infrastructure to run the School. These efforts brought fruits in the form of more and more enrolments of students. Consequently, the School got the permission to start Standard IV in the year 1917. But, for the higher education, students were required to go to Udupi. In order to avoid this, Class V and VI were introduced in 1929, Class VII in 1930 and Class VIII in 1931.With this the student strength continued to rise but raising finances to meet the increasing overhead expenses was getting critical. Teachers went without salary or worked for lesser salaries, however, without compromising on the commitment to give quality education.
The School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the same time when our Country was celebrating the Independence from the British i.e. in the year 1947. In the same year Sri T K Srinivasa Rao, who was already a teacher in the School, took control both as the Head Master as well as the School Correspondent.

The Golden Era:

It was a turnaround then on. Support from the Government on one hand and the helping hand from the local people and Old Students of the School started pouring in. It was all-round development thereafter. The School earned a very good name in imparting quality education and positioned itself in the Top 5 Best Higher Primary Schools in Udupi Taluk. It also excelled in other extracurricular activities including sports. The students strength crossed 1200 and it used to be prestigious to get admission in the School. The year 1982 was another important year when the Old Students Association of the school celebrated its Silver Jubilee. Old students under the leadership of late Sri Ammunje Nagesh Nayak took the initiative and conducted mass contact programme and gave their might in the form of a two storied building "Rajathadri", in which the High School was started in the year 1984.

Recent Trends concerning Kannada Medium Schools:

In the recent years, with the change in the policy of the Govt. more and more English medium Schools are being opened and more and more parents wanting their children to study in English medium, has made the downfall of many good Kannada medium Schools. Our School is no exception. But we are fighting a royal battle competing with the new generation Schools by imparting quality education. But it is sad that we are not getting quality students. When the student strength is decreasing, the Govt. reduces the number of teachers. But School cannot go strictly by the numbers fixed by the Govt. So it has become a challenge to maintain quality by employing additional good teachers to whom the salary has to be paid by the management.
Govt. used to provide Rs. 25000/ to Rs. 30000/ every year as maintenance grant which was very helpful to conduct the annual maintenance to the building and other sundry work. But since the year 2000 this grant has been stopped for aided Schools. The main building of the Higher Primary School in which thousands of students have spent their School days during its existence of more than 60 years, is in urgent need of strengthening/ repairs. Like this there are many other urgent requirements or areas which needs immediate attention, but could not be taken up due to financial constraints.
