रामचरितमानस की एक चौपाई, जिसमें संतत्व की पूरी परिभाषा समाई है…
गोस्वामी तुलसीदास कहते हैं—
“साधु चरित सुभ चरित कपासू।
निरस बिसद गुनमय फल जासू॥
जो सहि दुख परछिद्र दुरावा।
बंदनीय जेहिं जग जस पावा॥”
कपास स्वयं कष्ट सहकर भी दूसरों के लिए वस्त्र बनता है और अपने भीतर कुछ नहीं रखता। तुलसीदास ने इसी उपमा के माध्यम से संत के चरित्र को समझाया है—
जो स्वयं दुःख सह ले, पर दूसरों के दोषों को प्रकट न करे; वही सच्चे अर्थों में वंदनीय है।

शायद संतत्व का सबसे सुंदर रूप यही है—
दूसरों के दोष देखने से पहले उनके गुणों को देखना और उनके दोषों को ढँक लेना।
