This year's Nobel Prize in medicine has been awarded to Harvey J. Alter (US), Michael Houghton (UK) and Charles M. Rice (US) for the discovery of the Hepatitis C virus.

According to the WHO, 70 million people are infected with Hepatitis C around the world.

Hepatitis has been known since ancient times. The word is a combination of 'hepar' (liver) and 'ititis' (inflammation).

In the 1960s, many people receiving blood transfusions died from a mysterious liver inflammation.

Two viruses were identified as being partly responsible - Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. This still left a large proportion of cases unresolved.

Harvey Alter methodically established that these infections were caused by a virus.

Michael Houghton assembled the viral genome from small DNA and RNA samples found in the blood of infected patients - which is by no means an easy task.

Finally, Charles M. Rice isolated the part of the virus genome responsible for the infection - thereby conclusively proving the relationship between the virus and the disease.

Their efforts have made a once deadly disease curable, saving millions of lives each year.
