Electrolytes & EKG Changes

🧂 1. Potassium (K⁺) Changes

Hypokalemia (↓ K⁺) – Blue section
• ↓ ST segment (ST depression)
• Inverted T wave
• Prominent U wave
➡ May lead to arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia or torsades de pointes.
(Illustration shows U wave following the T wave.)

Hyperkalemia (↑ K⁺) – Blue section
• Tall, peaked T waves (first sign)
• Prolonged PR interval
• Widened QRS complex
• ST elevation → sine-wave pattern (severe)
➡ Risk: cardiac arrest.
(Illustration shows sharp, tall T wave.)

🦴 2. Calcium (Ca²⁺) Changes

Hypocalcemia (↓ Ca²⁺) – Green section
• Prolonged QT interval (due to long ST)
• Flat T wave
• Severe → torsades de pointes / ventricular tachycardia
(Illustration: QT interval markedly prolonged.)

Hypercalcemia (↑ Ca²⁺) – Green section
• Short QT interval (due to short ST)
• Wide or flattened T wave
➡ Rarely causes arrhythmia but suggests hyperparathyroidism or malignancy.
(Illustration: QT interval shortened.)

💜 3. Magnesium (Mg²⁺) Changes

Hypomagnesemia (↓ Mg²⁺) – Orange section
• ↓ ST segment
• Inverted T wave
• Prolonged QT interval
➡ Often coexists with hypokalemia, increasing torsades de pointes risk.
(Illustration: prolonged QT with depressed ST.)

Hypermagnesemia (↑ Mg²⁺) – Orange section
• Prolonged PR interval
• Widened QRS complex
➡ Severe → heart block or asystole.
(Illustration: extended PR and widened QRS.)

💡 Overall Concept
• K⁺ affects T waves & QRS (muscle excitability)
• Ca²⁺ affects QT duration (contractile timing)
• Mg²⁺ stabilizes rhythm (modulates K⁺ & Ca²⁺)

Two Malayali nurses, Abhijith Jees and Ajeesh Nelson, revived a 34-year-old passenger who suffered cardiac arrest aboard an Air Arabia flight from Kochi to Abu Dhabi.

Their quick CPR stabilised him before landing, turning a routine journey into a lifesaving mission.

Both men, travelling for new nursing jobs, were later honoured by Response Plus Holding for their courage and compassion.
