A few snaps from the fourth session in our Research Talk Series.

Dr Noorunnida spoke about children's magazines and their role in creating different notions of childhood. She critically looked at stories and characters from diverse children's magazines published in Kerala and examined how they shaped, reflected and resisted existing discourses and disparities in the society. Her study juxtaposes popular children’s magazines and magazines for Muslim children in Malayalam to examine how these two streams of magazines present childhood and gender in different ways.

It was an insightful session, highly relatable as well as thought-provoking at the same time. The session concluded with some questions and comments from the audience.

Cadence recently organised our first nature camp— Eco Explorers: Monsoon Edition. Led by Mufeeda KT, the camp provided children with an opportunity to engage closely with the unique biodiversity of the Western Ghats. Organised with an intention to foster ecological awareness in young minds, this initiative encouraged children to take conscious green steps towards a sustainable tomorrow.

We started off with an early morning nature walk through the forests of Peechi, observing native flora and fauna and discussing ecological concepts such as soundscapes, invasive species, biodiversity degradation, carbon footprints, and climate change. The exploration further extended to the serene waterfalls nestled deep within the forest, creating a sense of wonder and connection with nature. Visiting the Wildlife Museum and Butterfly Garden at the Kerala Forest Research Institute was the favourite part of the camp for many. They were amazed by the variety of specimen and learning about the many endangered species, deepened their understanding of conservation and ecological heritage.

Mufeeda KT is a nature interpreter and former Project Scientist (DST) at KFRI with a specialisation in fungal plant pathology. She is also one of the founding members of Cadence, an organization that began its journey with a philosophy camp for children, with the aim of fostering critical thinking in young minds.

presented on "The Muslim Women Question: Subject Positions and Visibilities in Post 1990 Kerala" as part of Mujerada: Women in Conversation, a Research talk series initiated by Cadence in collaboration with CH Muhammed Koya Chair for Studies on Developing Societies.

The session covered Dr.Najda's study, one of the pioneering works in fostering a narrative grounded in cultural specificity through the intellectual engagements of Muslim women in print and digital media. The discourse around Muslim women in Kerala post-1990 has evolved significantly, intersecting with literature, digital media, and socio-political debates. Dr.Najda explores how the period witnessed a shift in Muslim women’s subjectivities, which were understood and represented, highlighting their agency and transformations in the backdrop of a changing socio-cultural and political milieu.

Dr.Najda's work inspires one to engage critically with visibility, representation, and agency, offering a framework for envisioning a more inclusive society. The session and the discussion reconfirmed our intention on our series of amplifying the diversity in academic spaces.

Cadence Research Talk series, part of the Mujerada: Women in Conversation initiative, started off today with Dr. Simi K Salim presenting on "South Asian Domesticities: Notes on Objects, Emotions and Dreamscapes."

The Research Talk Series aims to give visibility to female researchers from marginalised communities and their research endeavours, while also serving as a networking platform for women researchers and students interested in research.

Dr Simi's research explores the multidimensional homescapes that women inhabit and the way they bond with the everyday objects within the domestic space of home. She talked about the need to break away from stereotypical tropes of oppressed v/s liberated while researching women from marginalised communities. Her talk was a foray into fresh methodological possibilities while researching women.

Mujerada is Spanish for 'women coming together'. And truly, what a beautiful coming together it was!

What we envisioned as an intimate gathering of 20-25 when announcing the inaugural session of our Women in Conversation series turned out to be a full-house event, with a turnout of around 65 people. Women from across disciplines came to listen to our esteemed speakers share their insights on navigating academia's complex terrain, with its rigid structures and gatekeeping. Dr. Shamshad Hussein officially inaugrated the series. She and the other panelists reflected on their own academic journeys as women from marginalized communities, emphasizing the importance of confronting the challenges head-on and marking our presence. Participants also shared their experiences, concerns, and challenges.

The program deepened our conviction of how important such gatherings are, not only to come together, but to also throw the limelight on ourselves. It is time we move away from token representations and claim our rightful space in knowledge production.

We are truly humbled by the overwhelming response and look forward to many more enriching conversations..

Announcing Cadence Research Talk Series..

'Mujerada' (Mu-ha-ra-da) is a coming together of women to support, empower and celebrate, symbolising unity and solidarity through sisterhood.

A collective space for women researchers has long been a dream for us at Cadence.
