Letter g Rule
The letter g makes a hard /g/ sound or /j/ soft sound depending on the letters that follow it.
Hard g : when g is followed by the vowels a, o, u or any consonants, use /g/
Examples: gap, got, gut, glass, grab
Soft g : when g is followed by the vowels i, e, or y, use /j/.
Examples: giant, gem, gym
Common Exceptions
Some words break the rules and use a hard g sound even when followed by i or e.
Examples: get, gift.
