Book #273: My perception of Genghis Khan was profoundly challenged and transformed by this book. I started reading it after my wife, who discovered its popularity among influential leaders, kept praising it while she read. Intrigued by her enthusiasm, I decided to delve into it myself. 📚

Contrary to the common narrative of Genghis Khan as a ruthless conqueror, he was a visionary leader whose empire fostered significant cultural and technological advancements.

The book highlights the Mongols' unique approach to governance, which prioritized religious tolerance, cultural assimilation, and the promotion of trade. By implementing pragmatic solutions and adopting the best practices from various cultures, Genghis Khan and his successors created a foundation for a global culture that emphasized free commerce, open communication, and international diplomacy.

The subtitle says it all: Simple facts to counter Viral Falsehoods.

India is rife with conspiracy theories, and for those who follow the news, terms like Love Jihad and Forced Conversions are all too familiar. These narratives are not just propagated by politicians and the media but have also been embraced by majority population.

In this meticulously researched work, the authors - Sreenivasan jain , Mariyam Alavi, and Supriya Sharma, distinguished journalists associated with NDTV and Scroll Media undertake the task of scrutinizing the pervasive notion that "India's minorities are plotting to weaken the majority Hindu Community."

The 4 main claims take shape of the 4 chapters
- Love Jihad
- Population Jihad
- Large scale forced Conversions
- Muslim Appeasement

The book systematically debunks each assertion. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, including interviews with stakeholders from both sides, and mining decades of archival material from television and print media, coupled with historical records, the authors meticulously dissect the fabrications.

Upon close examination, all claims crumble under the weight of evidence. The book exposes how these narratives are constructed, perpetuated, and wielded for political gains, regardless of their truthfulness.

I got to know that now the people in power are not just borrowing Hindutva conspiracy theories - they are not inventing them. During covid we heard of term 'Corona Jihad', there is also something called 'Land Jihad'. And in 2023 a Chief minister claimed that his govt is working against 'Fertiliser Jihad'.

The book "Love Jihad and other Fictions" end with these lines: "It is hard to predict how many more such fictions will be spawned by those in power. What is easier to predict is the impact of the hateful lies: an India that no longer belongs equally to all its citizens."

Book #227: "We fought for two things - for Freedom and Independence. We attained Independence." Said Captain Bhau (Ramchandra Sripati Lad), Freedom fighter and head of Toofan Sena.

This book is an eye-opener for me, I grew up hearing stories about the giants of the Indian Independence struggle like Gandhi, Bose, Nehru, and Patel. But this book highlights the unknown heroes of India's freedom struggle.

These were countless men, women, and children, from all walks of life. They were farmers, labourers, homemakers, artisans, and others, who did all they could to oppose the British rule.

P. Sainath a renowned journalist and founder of Peoples Archives of Rural India (PARI) has been documenting and reporting on the issues of Rural India for over 3 decades.

Sainath and his team at PARI met many freedom fighters while working in villages and towns. In this book, he compiled the stories of 16 such anonymous heroes. In 2022, the youngest one alive was 95 years of age and the oldest was 105. Many of them were denied their Freedom Fighter Pensions due to a lack of documents and stringent rules. But all of them still take pride in what they did.

India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence. In the next few years, the last of the few remaining freedom fighters will be no more. A generation who saw independence happening will be gone. Sadly, there is no one celebrating the contributions of these men and women. Many of these nameless, faceless freedom fighters continue to live in acute poverty with meagre means, drawing satisfaction from the role they played in the freedom movement.

This book is a reminder of the efforts of these forgotten ordinary people and an effort to applaud their contributions.

As P. Sainath says "The post-1947 generation needs their stories. To learn... that freedom and independence are not the same thing. And to learn to make those come together".
