The Golden Jubilee Diamond is currently the largest cut and faceted diamond in the world, weighing an impressive 545.67 carats.

​Here is the story behind this massive gem:

​1. Discovery and "Unremarkable" Beginnings

​The diamond was discovered in 1985 at the Premier Mine in South Africa (the same mine that produced the famous Cullinan diamond). Initially, it was a rough stone of 755.5 carats. Because of its "ugly" brown color and deep internal cracks, it was nicknamed the "Unnamed Brown" and remained largely ignored for years.

​2. A Masterpiece of Cutting

​De Beers eventually used the stone to test new, highly advanced cutting tools and techniques. The task was given to world-renowned master cutter Gabriel Tolkowsky.

​The Process: It took two years to cut and polish the stone.

​The Result: A unique "fire rose cushion cut" with 148 facets. The process transformed the "muddy" brown color into a brilliant, deep golden-yellow.

​3. Gift to the King

​In 1995, a group of Thai businessmen purchased the diamond from De Beers. They intended it as a gift for King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his coronation (his Golden Jubilee) in 1996.

​A Royal Secret: At the time of the presentation, Thailand was facing financial difficulties. To avoid public backlash over such an expensive gift, the diamond was occasionally referred to as a "large golden topaz."

​The Blessing: Before being presented, the diamond was taken to the Vatican to receive a papal blessing from Pope John Paul II.

​4. Current Status

​Value: It is estimated to be worth between $4 million and $12 million, though its historical and royal significance makes it effectively priceless.

​Location: The diamond is now a part of the Thai Crown Jewels. It is kept in the Royal Museum at the Pimammek Golden Temple Throne Hall in Bangkok, where it is held under heavy security.
