Quora.com question:
What is the difference between "you are chosen" and "you have been chosen"?
( Answer requested by Ganesh Adhi )
Answer:
The expression "you are chosen" is used to convey a generalist point of view, usually followed by a condition.
E.g. *You are chosen* as the leader of your group if you have extra talents.
On the other hand, "you have been chosen" is used to express a real current situation. It may not require any condition.
E.g. *You have been chosen* as the leader of your group by the majority of its members.

Quora.com question :
Polite and kind behaviour by men which shows respect towards women. In this sentence "which" is used with "men" (living thing), I wanna know how and why?
( Answer requested by Jatin Dhiman )
Answer:
“Which” is a relative pronoun that is used as a pronoun (as a substitute) for a noun (antecedent) which has earlier been mentioned in the sentence.
“Which” usually has a non-living thing as its antecedent.
In the quoted sentence, “Which” appears to have “men” as its antecedent but it is not the fact. If you carefully analyse the sentence, you will be able to identify “Polite and kind behaviour” ( not "men") is the actual antecedent for the relative pronoun “Which.” “Polite and kind behaviour” is a non-living entity, so the use of “Which” as a pronoun for it is grammatically correct.
E.g. 1. I have a friend who is very intelligent.
( Here, “friend” is the antecedent and “who” is the appropriate relative pronoun for it.)
2. The intelligence of my friend, which was recognized by the management, got him quick promotion. ( Here, “The intelligence” , not “my friend”, is the antecedent and it is rightly represented by the relative pronoun “which.”)

Quora.com question:
How do you use be, been, and being in an English sentence?
( Answer requested by Michael Yamoah )
Answer :
“Be” is the root word for a whole group of verbs commonly known as “Be” Verbs.
The other verbs in this group are :
"am", "are", "is" - Present Tense variations.
"was", "were" - Past Tense variations.
"will be", "shall be" - Future Tense variations.
"being" - present participle.
"been" - past participle.
The above different forms of the “Be” Verbs are used depending on the number ( singular or plural) and person ( first person, second person or third person) of the pronoun used.
I. Uses of “Be” :
However, the base form “Be” itself is used in the following cases :
1. If an Auxiliary Verb (helping verb) is combined with the “Be” form Main Verbs.
E.g. I "am" a student now. ( “am” is the “Be” form Verb ).
I could "be" an architect in the future.. ( “be” follows the Auxiliary Verb “could”.)
He "is" my friend. Soon he would "be" my colleague.
They "are" Electrical Engineers. They may "be" able to help you.
2. In Imperative Sentences ( like orders, requests and advices ) :
E.g. "Be" quiet. "Be" helpful to others. Let it "be" there.
3. When used as an Infinitive :
E.g. She wants to "be" an honest employee.
4. When describing hypothetical choices :
E.g. "Be" it coffee or tea, I don’t care because I don’t drink either.
II. Uses of “Being” :
“Being” is the Present Participle form of “Be” which is used in the following cases :
1. When preceded by another “Be” Verb in the same sentence, whether in Active Voice or Passive Voice.
E.g. He was "being" rude to his sister when I met him last - Active Voice.
His sister "was" being rudely treated by him often - Passive Voice.
2. to emphasize a fact :
E.g. He is silly - General statement.
He is "being" silly - Emphatic statement.
3. As a Non-finite verb, as part of a Phrase :
E.g. "Being" the eldest son of the family , he had more responsibilities than his other siblings.
III. Uses of “been” :
“ been” is the Past Participle form of “Be” which is used in the following cases :
1. Following any of the “have” verbs in a sentence.
E.g. He had "been" to his home town last week. ( been = to have gone to some place and come back.)
Where have you "been" all this time ?
2. In all Perfect Continuous Tenses :
E.g. I have "been" teaching English for the past 18 years.
He had "been" working for IBM between 2000 and 2010.
3. In all Passive Voice sentences after the “have” verbs.
E.g. We have "been" selected as the Best Team - Passive Voice
He "had" been offered a new assignment - Passive Voice.

Quora.com question :
Is the adjective only part of speech that's degree can be changed? As an example "I have more intelligency than him"- " He has not so intelligency as I". So what about this, where we are using the noun, "intelligency" to change the degree?
Answer:
The degrees of the following 3 parts of sentence can be changed into the other forms of degrees of comparison :
1. Adjective
2. Adverb, and
3. Noun.
E.g.
1. She is more intelligent than her elder sister.
( "intelligent" is an Adjective expressed in the comparative degree here.)
2. She answered the question more intelligently than her elder sister.
( "intelligently" is an Adverb expressed in the comparative degree here.)
3. Her elder sister has less intelligence than she (has).
( "intelligence" is a Noun expressed in the comparative degree here. "intelligency" is not a correct word.)

Quora.com question :
What is the difference between these two sentences and are they both correct? 1-if I don't start packing up, I will miss my flight 2-if I didn't start packing up, I would miss my flight.
Answer:
Both the sentences are correct but have different meanings.
1- If I don’t start packing up, I will miss my flight - This is known as Type I Conditional Clause, describing a present condition to be fulfilled if the event described in the Main Clause has to become true.
2- If I didn’t start packing up, I would miss my flight - This is known as Type II Conditional Clause, describing an unreal, unlikely, or hypothetical condition to be fulfilled, and because of the condition’s unreal nature, the event described in the Main Clause has become highly unlikely to happen.
E.g. If I had a billion rupees, I would establish a University.
3. If I hadn’t started packing up, I would have missed my flight - This is known as Type III Conditional Clause, describing a past condition and the possible consequence which could have happened, but did not happen in the past.
E.g. If she had answered all the questions, she would have scored full marks.

Quora.com question :
What is the comparative degree of "I do not write English so correctly as he"?
Answer:
The comparative degree for the given sentence could be :
"He writes English more correctly than I (do)."
A possible objection to this could be, “Someone or something could be ‘correct’. How could they be ‘more correct’ “?
This is the explanation :
A candidate appearing for a job interview could say, ’I am a good candidate’, using the positive degree of comparison.
If the next candidate says, ‘ I am a better candidate’, and a third candidate says, ‘ I am the best candidate’, obviously the third candidate will only be selected in preference to the other two candidates.
The first candidate himself could have used the superlative term (‘the best’) at the first instance itself and bagged the job. He failed to do so, and he has none else to blame other than himself.
In such a situation, naturally, he would confess,
“he uses (writes) English more correctly than I .”

Quora.com question :
How do you convert this simple sentence into a compound sentence, “Having been informed of his fathers death, he made arrangement to return to India at the earliest.”?
Answer:
A compound sentence should have two Finite Verbs, and the resultant two sentences should be combined by a Coordinating Conjunction ( like, For, And, Not, But, Or, Yet, and So)
So, the given simple sentence can be converted into a compound sentence like this:
He was informed of his father’s death, so he made arrangements to return to India at the earliest.
Note: “was informed” and “made” are the two Finite Verbs, and “so” is the Coordinating Conjunction combining both the independent clauses of the sentence.

Quora.com question :
Why is the present perfect tense used here, "I have had a busy day" and "I have had a busy week"? When there is no present impact?
Answer :
How do you say there is no present impact ?
The statement ‘’I have had a busy day”, can only be made at the end of the present day (today), which means the stated information has a direct relevance to, or impact on, the present time. That’s why the present perfect tense has been used.
If the busy day happens to be last Sunday, you cannot use the present perfect tense. It would be wrong to say, ‘’I have had a busy day on last Sunday.” You simply say, “ I had a busy day on last Sunday.”( Simple Past Tense)
In the same way, “I have had a busy week", which is in the present perfect tense, refers to the present week, whereas to refer to a past busy week, you may have to say, “I had a busy week at the beginning of this month"( Simple Past Tense).

Quora.com question :
What and when to use "could, might, should, would, ought"? I see that these words are sometimes used in the present tense although they are in the past tense. I was taught at school that past tense is only used in the past.
( Answer requested by Rabi Piri )
Answer :
“Could, might, should, would and ought” are all Modal Auxiliary Verbs, which modify the meaning of the accompanying Main Verbs, either by indicating their past tense, or more often, indicating the moods of the Main Verbs. in which case, they could be used in the Present Tense as well.
E.g. 1. I *could* run a mile, when I was young - Past Tense.
2. Could you please post this letter for me ?- Present tense, Polite request.
3. She told me that she might apply for a new job - Past Indicative.
4. It might rain this evening - Future Subjunctive ( which may or may not happen.)
5. The Principal said that all students should pay their fees before the month end - Indicative mood expressing Futurity from the standpoint of past time.
6. You should keep a promise - Advice for the Present and the Future.
7. He said that he would look into my file - Indicative mood expressing Futurity from the standpoint of past time.
8. After dinner, generally he would read a novel - Present Indefinite Tense, describing a customary or habitual action.
9 . We ought to help poor people - Present Tense when used with a Present Infinitive (‘to help.’)
10. She ought to have performed well - Past Tense when used with a Perfect Infinitive (“to have performed.”)

Quora.com question :
Which one is correct? I consider both of them correct. Or I consider both of them TO BE correct.
( Answer requested by Mohee Aldeen Gasaymeh )
Answer:
1. I consider both of them correct.
2. I consider both of them TO BE correct.
Both the above sentences are grammatically correct, but even when you say, “I consider both of them correct”, you actually mean, “I consider both of them TO BE correct.”
So, it is preferable to use the more explicit second expression than the first expression.

Quora.com question :
How would you like to describe your strength using an adjective?
( Answer requested by Zznehr Deko )
Answer:
You could say, “ I am a stubborn optimist.”
“Optimist” itself means a “Positive Thinker”, thereby having a strong tone of “positivity” about it. When you add the adjective “stubborn” (which means “ not changing your stand even when others want you to”), to it, it projects you as a determined person strong in your convictions.
So your strength is projected in still better a light !
