Eucalyptus macrocarpa, or Mottlecah, is a mallee Eucalyptus that is native to the south-west of Western Australia and noted for its large, spectacular flowers.

Learning can change the brain by building new synapses. A new study in Neuron shows that synchronized brain waves in different parts of the brain enables rapid learning. Neuroscientists at MIT taught monkeys to categorize different patterns of dots, which caused waves in the prefrontal cortex and striatum to synchronize, enabling communication between these two areas. For the first time, scientists were able to show that these two brain regions interacted during the learning process and formed a new functional circuit. What's more, this functional circuit was based on the rhythmic synchronization of brain waves. The researchers are planning more experiments to determine how the human brain deals with abstract thought, and how new information is integrated into existing functional circuits.
