THE STORY OF REAL ‘JIMMY’ OF SHERSHAAH: 494, SUJANIAN

This day in 1999 was not just another date in history — it was the day courage walked into the freezing heights of Kargil and wrote a story that India will never forget. When the enemy had illegally occupied our sacred peaks and threatened the lifeline of NH-1A, our soldiers rose with one mission: to reclaim every inch of Indian soil, no matter the cost. And among those brave hearts stood Captain Sanjeev Singh Jamwal — calm in the storm, fearless under fire, and unstoppable in the face of death.

On 20 June 1999, during Operation Vijay, Captain Sanjeev Singh Jamwal was tasked with the recapture of Point 5140 in the Dras sector. The enemy had dug in with heavily fortified sangars, but he moved forward with complete surprise, leading from the front with his column, and with the battle cry “Durge Mata Ji Jai”, he stormed the first sangar in fierce hand-to-hand combat. He did not stop there. He pushed ahead, attacked the second sangar, and with unmatched grit and fearless leadership, personally killed three intruders, becoming instrumental in the successful capture of Point 5140. For this extraordinary act of gallantry, he was awarded the Vir Chakra — a mark of honour that immortalised his bravery forever.

Born in Shimla on 2 August 1974, to Kehar Singh Jamwal and Malka Devi, and rooted in the proud soil of Pathiar village, Kangra, Sanjeev Singh Jamwal’s journey is the journey of a true son of India. An alumnus of Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira, he was commissioned into the Army Service Corps on 7 June 1997, and destiny soon placed him where legends are made — on the battlefield. His role as “Jimmy” in Shershaah brought his heroism to the screen, but the real story was always larger than cinema: it was the story of a young officer who chose duty over fear and nation over self.

Today, Colonel Sanjeev Singh Jamwal stands not just as a decorated officer, but as a hero, a legend, and an inspiration — a living reminder that real greatness is built in discipline, forged in sacrifice, and proved in moments when the nation needs its bravest sons the most. From Sainik School to Kargil, from a young cadet to a Vir Chakra awardee, his life tells every Indian one timeless truth: the truest legends are those who fight for the flag and live for the pride of their country.

Jai Hind.

REMEMBERING MAJ PRADEEP R. TATHAWADE, KC (POSTHUMOUS)

🕯️ 17 June 2000 – A Hero's Journey from Sainik School to Immortality

Born on 21 September 1963 in Kendur Pabal village of Pune district, Maharashtra, Major Pradeep R. Tathawade grew up with an unwavering dream of serving the nation. That dream took shape at Sainik School Satara, where he joined the school and later became part of the 64th NDA Intake (July 1980). His entry in the school's NDA intake register is listed as Sr. No. 213 – Pradip R. Tathawade. From his school days itself, he displayed discipline, leadership and an unshakeable determination to wear the olive green uniform.

From Sainik School, he moved to the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry (8 JAK LI) in June 1984. Over the next sixteen years, he served in some of the toughest operational environments, including the Siachen Glacier and various counter-insurgency areas, earning a reputation as a courageous and battle-hardened officer.

On 17 June 2000, while serving in the Poonch Sector of Jammu & Kashmir, intelligence reports indicated the infiltration of heavily armed terrorists from across the border. As the Second-in-Command of his battalion, Major Tathawade personally led the operation to track and intercept them.

A fierce gun battle followed.

During the encounter, he noticed three terrorists attempting to escape. With complete disregard for his own safety, he charged forward under heavy enemy fire and eliminated two terrorists, including one area commander. Refusing to let the third terrorist escape, he engaged him at close quarters. In the intense hand-to-hand encounter, both fired simultaneously and Major Tathawade sustained fatal injuries. He made the supreme sacrifice while ensuring the mission's success.

For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice, Major Pradeep R. Tathawade was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

Today, we remember not just a decorated soldier, but a proud Ajinkyan of Sainik School Satara, whose life continues to inspire generations of young cadets.

From the dormitories of Sainik School Satara to the battlefields of Poonch, he lived by one ideal—Service Before Self.

Major Pradeep R. Tathawade, KC (P) Amar Rahe. Jai Hind.

Remembering Lt Ram Prakash Roperia, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous)

09 June 1959 – 09 June 1984

Today, on his martyrdom anniversary, we pay tribute to one of the bravest sons of Sainik School Kunjpura — Lt Ram Prakash Roperia (School No. P/990), who laid down his life in the service of the nation and was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

Born on 09 June 1959, Lt Roperia passed out from Sainik School Kunjpura in 1976 and was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1981. As an officer of the 26 Madras Regiment, he quickly earned the respect of his seniors and men through his professionalism, courage, and unwavering dedication to duty.

During Operation Blue Star in June 1984, his battalion was assigned one of the most difficult tasks inside the heavily fortified Golden Temple complex. On the night of 5–6 June 1984, Lt Roperia's company was tasked with capturing the first floor of a strongly defended building occupied by militants. The approach was covered by intense automatic weapon fire, making any assault extremely hazardous.

Understanding the urgency of the mission, Lt Roperia personally led the assault. Three attempts to reach the objective failed due to relentless enemy fire. Yet he refused to withdraw. Displaying extraordinary courage and leadership, he joined a fourth assault and climbed towards the objective under a hail of bullets.

Despite being wounded, he continued to lead from the front, motivating his men and pressing the attack. Ignoring his injuries, he fought on until the position was captured. His actions played a decisive role in the success of the operation. Gravely wounded during the battle, Lt Roperia later succumbed to his injuries on 09 June 1984, his 25th birthday.

For his most conspicuous bravery, exceptional leadership, and supreme sacrifice in the face of grave danger, the nation honoured him with the Ashok Chakra (Posthumous).

Lt Ram Prakash Roperia's story is a shining example of the values that Sainik Schools strive to instill—courage, leadership, selfless service, and devotion to the nation. More than four decades later, his legacy continues to inspire generations of cadets, soldiers, and young Indians.

He was only 24.
His courage was timeless.
His sacrifice was eternal.

We salute the hero of Kunjpura.
We salute the Ashok Chakra awardee.
We salute Lt Ram Prakash Roperia.

Jai Hind 🇮🇳

Remembering a true hero: Major Rushikesh Ramani, Sena Medal (Posthumous)

Roll No. 3002, Batch 1994-2001, Sainik School Balachadi. Major Rushikesh Ramani's journey defined devotion. He wasn't just a School Captain and a School Topper ; he was a brilliant student who rejected traditional paths, choosing the uniform as his life's vocation.

He lived by a creed he wrote in his diary: "I heartily believe that army is not a profession, it is a religion."

In June 2009, commanding an infantry company in the dense forests of Kupwara, Major Ramani received intelligence about a group of 10 infiltrating militants. Leading his men into the fierce engagement, he ensured the mission succeeded, neutralizing three terrorists before making the supreme sacrifice at the age of 26.

For his outstanding bravery, unfaltering leadership, and ultimate sacrifice, he was awarded the Sena Medal (Posthumous). His legacy, formalized through the Major Rushikesh Ramani Memorial Trust, continues to inspire young Indians to choose service over self.

We honor the lion of Balachadi. Jai Hind! 🙏

REMEMBERING FLT LT CHOW ONGPEE MAUNGLANG, VM (GALLANTRY), ALUMNUS SAINIK SCHOOL GOALPARA

03 June 1992 — A Hero Who Fought Till His Last Breath

Some stories of courage are celebrated across the nation. Others remain hidden in the pages of history, known only to those who served alongside them. Today, we remember one such extraordinary hero — Flight Lieutenant Chow Ongpee Maunglang, a proud alumnus of Sainik School Goalpara, fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force, and recipient of the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).

Born on 23 September 1960 in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, Ongpee Maunglang was a quiet, disciplined, and exceptionally talented young boy. He joined Sainik School Goalpara in 1973, where he excelled in academics, sports, leadership, and public speaking. His outstanding all-round performance earned him the prestigious All-Rounder Trophy, and he went on to become the School Captain, inspiring fellow cadets with his leadership and character.

His journey of excellence continued at the National Defence Academy, after which he was commissioned into the Indian Air Force. Flying was not merely his profession—it was his passion. Known for his courage, professionalism, and adventurous spirit, he quickly established himself as a highly respected fighter pilot.

On 3 June 1992, while conducting an air combat training mission from MOFTU, Tezpur, tragedy struck. At approximately 1420 hours, his MiG-21 canopy exploded mid-air, showering him with perspex fragments that shattered his cheekbones and caused severe injuries. Despite the immense pain and shock, he remained calm and initiated the ejection sequence.

But the emergency was far from over.

The damaged canopy failed to separate cleanly. Injured, bleeding, and tumbling through the air, Flight Lieutenant Maunglang refused to give up. Displaying extraordinary courage and presence of mind, he manually operated the separation mechanism, forced his way through the shattered canopy, and activated the manual D-ring to deploy his parachute.

He had done everything right.

Yet, while exiting through the damaged canopy, he was struck on the head by the solid frame and sustained fatal injuries.

The official citation would later record a simple but powerful line:

"The officer fought to the very last breath."

For his exceptional courage, determination, and devotion to duty in the face of certain death, Flight Lieutenant Chow Ongpee Maunglang was posthumously awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) on 26 January 1993.

More than three decades later, his story continues to inspire. From the parade grounds of Sainik School Goalpara to the skies above India, he embodied the values of courage, leadership, sacrifice, and service before self.

Today, we salute a son of Arunachal Pradesh, a proud Sainik School alumnus, an Indian Air Force warrior, and a hero who never stopped fighting.

"He fought to the very last breath."

🕯️ Forever remembered.
Forever honoured.
