The Foundation of Indian Constitution: Regulating Act 1773

The Regulating Act of 1773 was the first major step taken by the British Government to control and regulate the affairs of the East India Company in India. It laid the foundations of central administration in India.

Key Provisions:
1️. Governor of Bengal redesignated as Governor-General of Bengal (Warren Hastings was the first!).
2️. Presidencies of Bombay and Madras became subordinate to Bengal.
3️. Establishment of the Supreme Court at Calcutta (1774).
4️. Prohibition of private trade and bribes for Company servants.
5️. Strengthened control through the Court of Directors.
