DBT-Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology Leading, Discovery & Innovation The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is a growing phenomenon.

Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, RGCB began in 1990 amongst humble surroundings as a small charitable society called the Centre for Development of Education, Science and Technology (C-DEST). In 1991, recognizing its potential, the C-DEST was made a “Grant-in-Aid” institute of the Government of Kerala and renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Development of Education, Science

and Technology (RGC-DEST), becoming the first institute in the country to be named after Sri Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minster of India. In quick time, the institute attained national and international recognition with leading discoveries and findings in medical and plant biotechnology. The institute also received honors for being among the top PhD schools in biotechnology. In 2007 the Union Cabinet of the Government of India took the landmark decision to make RGCB a national research centre.

The Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, BRIC–Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB), successfully conducted an online workshop on proteomics data analysis on 04 September 2026.

The workshop brought together 89 participants from across India, including students, research scholars, and scientists from diverse academic and research backgrounds. The workshop covered key aspects of proteomics data processing, statistical analysis, bioinformatics, and interpretation of proteomics datasets, along with practical demonstrations and interactive Q&A sessions.

We sincerely thank all the participants for their enthusiastic participation and active engagement throughout the workshop.

Special thanks to Dr. Anish Kundu and Dr. Arun Surendran for conducting the sessions and sharing their expertise.

We look forward to organizing more such programs to strengthen capacity and knowledge in mass spectrometry and proteomics data analysis.

BRIC-RGCB has organized a "Workshop on NGS Fundamentals, Data Analysis, and Visualization—DNA-Seq and Variant Calling," from 31st August to 3rd September 2026 at the Bioinformatics facility, Akkulam Campus. The workshop provided intensive training in DNA-Seq and variant calling. The workshop was attended by 20 participants. Dr. Vipin Singh conducted the hands-on training program.

"A Big Milestone for BRIC-RGCB!
We are excited to share one of the biggest discoveries in our research journey! A groundbreaking discovery from Dr. Mahendran’s lab has been published in Nature Nanotechnology—one of the world’s leading journals, with a 5-year Impact Factor of 42. 6.
This latest work, led by Varsha Shaji, PhD student at BRIC-RGCB, and Dr. Neethu, Postdoctoral Researcher, under the supervision of Dr. Mahendran, has the title "A self-assembled peptide forms α-helical nanopores for ultrasensitive biomarker profiling."

The family celebrated the harvest festival of Kerala, "Onam," in the traditional style on the auspicious day of Chingam 1 (17th August 2026), which also marks the beginning of the Malayalam calendar. The function began with the welcome address by Dr. Beena Pillai, the director. The staff and students participated in several cultural programs that highlighted diverse perspectives, creativity, and innovation. This was followed by the traditional Onam Sadya and several sports competitions. The winners were awarded prizes. The BRIC-RGCB family extends their warm and special Onam greetings to everyone.
