ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് മാതൃഭാഷാപഠനത്തിന് അവസരം ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്നതിനായി കേരള സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ആവിഷ്‌കരിച്ച പദ്ധതിയാണ് മലയാളം മിഷന്‍. സ്വന്തം നാട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും മലയാള ഭാഷയില്‍ നിന്നും അകന്ന് വിവിധ സാമൂഹിക-സാംസ്‌കാരിക പശ്ചാത്തലങ്ങളില്‍ ജീവിക്കുന്നവരാണ് പ്രവാസിമലയാളികള്‍. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ വീട്ടിലൊഴികെയുള്ളിടത്തെല്ലാം ഹിന്ദിയോ ഇംഗ്ലീഷോ മറ്റേതെങ്കിലും ഭാഷയോ അവര്‍ക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്നു. ജന്മനാടിനോടും മാതൃഭാഷയോടുമുള്ള കാല്‍പ്പനികവും ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം നിറഞ്ഞതുമായ അഭിനിവേശമാണ് ഇവരില്‍ മക്കളെ മലയാളം പഠിപ്പിക്കണമെന്ന ആഗ്രഹമുണര്‍ത്തിയത്.
