NHS declared that they are introducing a new life-extending treatment for cervical patients in almost 15 years. It will be made available to hundreds of NHS patients from today.

The immunotherapy drug ‘pembrolizumab’ is the new addition to NHS treatment for incurable cervical cancer. Compared to chemotherapy alone, adding pembrolizumab to standard chemotherapy may help in extending patients’ lives by up to eight months on average. This drug works by stimulating the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells. The injected pembrolizumab target and blocks a specific protein on the surface of certain immune cells which then seek out and destroy the cancer cells.

This pembrolizumab is already offered by NHS for some other cancers such as breast, bowel, lung, and skin. But for incurable cervical cancer, this is the first new treatment in 15 years. It is a great relief for hundreds of cervical cancer patients.
Now, NHS England made a deal to fast-track the drug through the Cancer Drugs Fund making it immediately available. By this, around 400 patients are expected to benefit over the next three years.

In England, each year around 2600 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and approximately 690 people die due to this terminal illness. Advanced cervical cancer is an aggressive disease that gives a hard time to patients and their families. But this new treatment is a life-changing invention for these patients. Now, they have a chance to extend their life and allows them to spend some precious time with their loved ones.
