Unmasking Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari, situated at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian sea at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent, is named after the eponymous goddess. As a historically rooted, religiously vibrant coastal town with an economy driven by tourism, fishing and agriculture, Kanyakumari has tightly knit communities, numerous architectural landmarks, a sensitive but diverse ecology and a blend of cultures.
This semester our students set out to unmask Kanyakumari and explore the parts of it that donโt always make their way to tourist brochures and Instagram worthy posts. They sought to understand its local inhabitants and communities, the quotidian rhythms and patterns of their lives, the seasonal flux that characterizes Kanyakumariโs major economies and the systems and institutions that undergird it.
They endeavored to identify sites and understand contexts within which they could intervene architecturally to build community, resolve issues, enhance economy, provide infrastructure and make spaces that serve people while simultaneously empowering them.

The visit included Indian Music Experience Museum, the interactive museum offering insights to multi sensory exhibition design; Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), a contemporary institution with modular gallery spaces and adaptable design solutions; National War Memorial, an emotionally evocative space combining symbolism, spatial procession and landscape architecture and National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), with a blend of heritage and modern design offering layered spatial experience.
Students critically observed and analyzed each space through physical, ephemeral, and conceptual devices, enhancing their understanding of how architecture shapes experience, memory, and meaning.
