🌱 ROOTS
→ Absorb water and minerals from the soil
→ Transport them UPWARD through the stem
→ Reach every part of the plant

🪵 STEM
→ Transports water & minerals UPWARD ⬆️ to leaves
→ Transports food DOWNWARD ⬇️ to roots
→ Green stems also assist in PHOTOSYNTHESIS
→ Distributes food to every part of the plant

🍃 LEAVES
→ Receive water and minerals from roots via stem
→ Use sunlight + CO₂ + water = prepare FOOD
→ This process is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS
→ Food travels back DOWN through stem to roots

How does a plant decide to grow UP — and not sideways? 🌱

The answer is sitting right at the tip of the shoot.
It’s called the APICAL BUD — or TERMINAL BUD.
And it’s one of the most important concepts
in ICSE Grade 6 Chapter 1 — The Leaf.

Here’s what Dr. Habeeba explained live in class today:

🌿 APICAL BUD (Terminal Bud)
→ Located at the very TIP of the shoot
→ Responsible for VERTICAL growth of the plant
→ Makes the plant grow TALLER ↑
→ Contains actively dividing cells — the apical meristem

🌿 AXILLARY BUD (Lateral Bud)
→ Located in the AXIL — the angle between the leaf and stem
→ Gives rise to NEW BRANCHES
→ Makes the plant grow WIDER →

Two buds. Two completely different jobs.
Both essential for a plant to grow into its full form.

Most Grade 6 students know the word “bud.”
Very few can explain what makes an apical bud
different from an axillary bud —
and why that difference matters in the exam.
