There are many questions that arise when inquiring about the graduate program. One very common question is -'who will grant the degrees?'. The degrees are granted by Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, India under a collaborative arrangement with the Bhaktivedanta Institute.

History of studies- Starting in the mid 70's leading scientists and philosophers felt advances in the sciences -- in fields such as biology, neuroscience, computer science, along with underlying physics and chemistry -- has made the scientific field of Consciousness Studies possible.

The Bhaktivedanta Institute cherishes the privilege to have started the world's first graduate degree program (M.S./Ph.D.) in the rapidly emerging field of consciousness studies. This program has been launched IN Bombay in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science. http://www.bvinst.edu/

One of the ways in which consciousness can be approached is by treating the human observer as a more complicated material system, built out of (relatively) less-complicated material systems, such as atoms and molecules, DNA/RNA and cells. This, also known as 'Cognitive Science' - as it was called in the 70's, revolved around studying conscious behavior. Take a look at the current graduate program in Consciousness Studies that we now offer. http://www.bvinst.edu/the-program

One of the approaches within the consciousness field that we deal with is to "Argue that consciousness, being a quintessentially subjective phenomenon, cannot be studied within a empirical science that is committed to the third-person perspective." Our graduate program offers a unique opportunity to specialize in the expanding field of consciousness studies, it also covers the wide range of work to be found in this important new field, including the latest experimental findings, theoretical models and research paradigms, giving you the up to date Education/knowledge you need for today. Bhaktivedanta Institute's aims at offering a new perspective on foundational problems in allied fields of modern science. At present, a major effort is aimed around redefining and solving the famed 'measurement problem' within quantum theory. We expect this work to lead to fundamental contributions in other fields. Some examples:

Yet another feedback from an alumnus of Bhaktivedanta Institute from Saberi Roy (Year: 2000):

“The MS program attracted my attention because its basic issue of inquiry is one of the most fascinating aspects of existence, i.e. and also the basic approach of inquiry is interdisciplinary and not restricted to any particular field of study.
My M.S dissertation is on the 'Problem of Cause within Consciousness Studies' and where causality stands in the natural sciences. The institute's growing is my favorite haunt and has an excellent collection of books related to all fields of consciousness studies. The Institute's unique effort in bringing the 'holy grail of knowledge', the phenomenon of Consciousness, that has perplexed humanity for the past thousands of years, within the realm of science, is worthy of great appreciation and will definitely meet with success.”

M.S. is not a study of consciousness directly. It is a rigorous scientific study of matter while taking into account the presence of consciousness in the lived world.
There are other approaches within the field of consciousness studies:

1. Stay within the limits of current empirical science & account for the phenomenon of consciousness;
2. Envisage that the study of consciousness requires a radically new approach within science.
3. Argue that consciousness, being a quintessentially subjective phenomenon, cannot be studied within a empirical science that is committed to the third-person perspective.

admitted into our M.S. program will study all of these approaches in appropriate courses.

Here’s a testimonial from an alumnus from 2007, Jayant Mishra, whose research interests include Philosophy of , Microbiology etc.: "Scientists investigate that which already is. Technologists create that which has never been. I wished to engage in both. This choice was enhanced by a personal yearning to apply all that I learned. This was only possible in the field of . The interdisciplinary approach made it more interesting. It was this need that propelled me to join Bhaktivedanta Institute, Mumbai "
