A Dad’s Knitting Journey

He walked into my office with a bright smile, asking, “Will you teach me to knit?” I was momentarily taken aback—not from doubt or lack of enthusiasm, but from sheer delight. A dad wanting to learn to knit? This was going to be incredible.

We’re living in transformative times, an era of evolving perspectives on gender roles. Fathers today are embracing responsibilities with remarkable skill and dedication. But wanting to learn to knit? That took my breath away.

My journey with this unconventional dad has been absolutely amazing—more than I can adequately express. It takes real courage to stand by your unconventional thoughts, to challenge traditional expectations, and to pursue them with unwavering determination.

Over my many years of teaching, I’ve worked with countless mothers and witnessed many boys take up knitting and crocheting. But this father was my first adult male student, and the experience was extraordinary. He approached every stitch with such love and dedication.

I stand up and applaud him—and all the fathers who think differently, who have the courage to embrace their unconventional ideas and stand tall in the face of traditional expectations. More power to every dad who dares to be different.
