Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, Tangasseri, Kollam It’s the place where we took our first steps in learning, where we found friends who became family, and where we figured out who we were. I & Std. II.

IJHSS wasn’t just a school, it was a part of us. The Infant Jesus Anglo Indian Boys School was established in 1940 by the visionary and saintly Bishop Jerome M. Fernandez , to cater to the education of the Anglo Indian Community, the then predominant community of the area. The School is situated in Tangasseri, which was a stronghold of western culture with a historical background of ancient Portug

uese, Dutch and English settlements. The School offers all round personality development to the students and help them grow gracefully in the knowledge and understanding of themselves in relation to others and to God. The school has mainly five sections, right from the LKG to Plus-2. Each section is under a separate teacher who in turn has to report to the Principal. The school upholds a tradition of excellence not only in academics but also in athletics, sports and games. Generally admissions are done for LKG, UKG, Std . However, in certain exceptional cases admissions are sanctioned to other classes also. Registration for LKG, UKG and other classes starts in October. Admission for the registered candidates in April.

The bougainvilleas were like friendly guardians, always watching out for us. They cooled us down during hot days, especially when it was exam time. Our parents would sit in the shade as we finished up. It was also where we signed our leave letters, which were small but important moments in our day. The air around them always felt calm, and everything seemed a little better. Those flowers were more than plants; they are a part of our memories, always there when we needed them. The place where the building once stood is now empty. It feels like a part of our life is missing, and it will never be filled again.

During the time we were in the first and second standard, there would be one week prior to Sports Day when the teachers would ask us to bring Rasna, sugar, and some other random things. We had to obey them, or we would get into big trouble. Yet, the first and second standard kids were not allowed to take part in the actual Sports Day.

So, in the year when I was in the first standard, I had given Rasna to my teacher just as she asked. But later, I was able to sneak onto the field with my cousin, who was in the 8th standard at that time in order to get a sight of what was happening. We had been strolling for a while when we felt thirsty, so I followed my cousin and headed to the cold drink counter.

Who was standing at the counter? My own teacher. She was selling a glass of Rasna for two rupees like she had opened a Rasna shop overnight. When I went to get one, she gave me that look, like, ‘What are you doing here?’ I just stood there, completely shocked, thinking, ‘Wait a minute, I gave you that Rasna’ And now, I have to pay for it? This is some next-level Rasna betrayal. ☹️

A few of us boys had a thing where we’d take a walk around Tangasseri after lunch, just to chill and enjoy some peace. One day, as we were walking on Convent Road, the aya (caretaker) gave us a look like we were up to no good, as if we were secretly there to check out the girls. Just then, one of the girls saw us, and surprised, ran to her friend, “Quick, the boys are coming to see us!” They probably thought we were plotting something since we all took the same bus in the evening. But in reality, we were just out for a casual walk, with no romantic drama involved.

We had two exams on the same day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Only a few boys thought we could concentrate better if we studied inside the old cathedral. We believed the calm atmosphere would bring us good luck. The place was so peaceful, we had never felt anything like it before. If studying had a perfect mood, that cathedral would’ve been the best place to study.
