The Department of Mathematics, Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya, organized an educational tour to Purulia from 19th to 21st December 2025. The tour aimed to blend learning with experience, encouraging students to explore the connection between mathematics and nature. The group visited popular locations such as Ayodhya Hills, Marble Lake, Charida Village, and Upper Dam, where students observed natural patterns, symmetry, and geometric formations in the landscape. Faculty members guided discussions on practical aspects of mathematics in architecture, ecology, and measurements. The serene environment of Purulia provided an inspiring setting for learning beyond the classroom. Students also interacted with local artisans, gaining insights into cultural and mathematical designs in traditional crafts. The trip strengthened teamwork, analytical thinking, and appreciation for the discipline’s real-world applications. Overall, the educational tour was both enriching and memorable, reflecting the department’s commitment to holistic learning experiences.

National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year on December 22 in India to honor the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920), one of the greatest mathematical minds in history. Born in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan displayed extraordinary talent in mathematics from a young age, despite having no formal training. His groundbreaking contributions include the Ramanujan number, infinite series, continued fractions, and modular forms, which profoundly influenced modern mathematics. His collaboration with British mathematician G. H. Hardy at Cambridge University brought global recognition to his work. Known as “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” Ramanujan’s deep insights continue to inspire students, researchers, and mathematicians worldwide. In 2012, the Government of India declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day to promote interest in mathematics and commemorate his legacy. Today, universities, schools, and institutions host events to celebrate mathematical creativity and the spirit of discovery embodied by Ramanujan.

Abhijit Sau, a student from the Mathematics Department, Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya (Tamluk College), participated in a college-level cricket tournament where he unfortunately sustained a bone and nerve injury while bowling. Despite undergoing several treatments, his condition has not improved. Doctors at reputed hospitals have recommended immediate nerve surgery, which is estimated to cost around 5 lakh rupees.

Abhijit comes from a financially challenged background, and his mother, his only parent, is unable to afford the cost of the surgery. We kindly appeal to everyone to contribute whatever amount you can to help support his recovery. Every donation, big or small, will make a difference.

Ross-Littlewood Paradox

One interesting paradox involving balls is the Ross-Littlewood Paradox (also known as the balls and vase problem). Here's a simplified explanation:

Imagine you have an empty vase and an infinite supply of numbered balls. The process goes as follows:

1. Step 1: At 60 seconds before noon, you place balls numbered 1 to 10 into the vase and remove ball number 1.
2. Step 2: At 30 seconds before noon, you place balls numbered 11 to 20 into the vase and remove ball number 2.
3. Step 3: At 15 seconds before noon, you place balls numbered 21 to 30 into the vase and remove ball number 3.

This process continues, with each step taking half the time of the previous step. The question is: How many balls are in the vase at noon?

There are two seemingly contradictory answers:

1. Infinite Balls: Intuitively, it seems like there should be an infinite number of balls in the vase because more balls are added than removed at each step.
2. Empty Vase: However, if you consider that each ball is eventually removed (ball number \( n \) is removed at step \( n \)), then by noon, every ball that was added has been removed, leaving the vase empty
