Among the many responsibilities left by our previous generation, legacy waste is one of them. Even the cleanest and most sustainable cities around the world must deal with the consequences of the method of disposal used in the past. While we have many policies and rules to ensure we don’t add more waste to our landfills, what about the ones that already exist?
Biomining is a process that aims to utilize legacy waste and clear up landfills or dump yards to reclaim old land that was previously under layers of garbage. Landfills – old or new have similar problems – leaching, landfill fires, toxicity and more.
In the biomining process, enzymes are first sprayed on the waste, mixing them to let them aerate, in a process called Bio-Remediation. This processes the organic waste present in the mixture and stabilizes it.
Next, different items in the remaining waste are segregated using a variety of machine based and manual processes. Those that can be recycled are sent to aggregators who will recycle it. However, the value of these items are less due to dirt and degradation.
Those that can’t be recycled are sent to factories to be used as fuel, or to waste to energy plants.
Even though biomining is a slow process and is affected by weather phenomenon like monsoons, it cleans up legacy waste leaving as little residue as possible. It also allows us to reclaim land with precious real estate value.

Organic Waste Processing
Large scale of food waste and other organic substances is collected, placed in long narrow rows. These rows are turned to improve oxygen and enzymes are added to speed up the process. This method - Windrow Composting - takes over a month to complete the process, depending upon a variety of external factors. This method is used when we have tons of organic waste collected by urban local bodies, a well-ventilated vacant piece of land with proper drainage to get rid of the excess moisture that arises from the process. Also known as offsite composting in our parlance.
However, Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) like tech parks and large commercial complexes have been mandated to convert their organic waste to compost onsite.
Enter the Organic Waste Convertor (OWC) which mechanically shreds and mixes the food waste. This creates conditions which acclerates the composting process. We suggest the capacity of the machine, which typically ranges from a few to hundreds of kilos, depending on the quantity of waste generated onsite and the storage area available onsite.
This is also called onsite composting. Organic waste is added into the composting machine. For every load of waste that’s added, 20% – 30% of compost is produced. Food waste is added onto the top hatch. Saw dust is added to enhance the process, balance the moisture, and prevent the mixture from getting mouldy. We also add enzymes which ensure foul odor is eliminated.
Once processed, its stacked in crates to ensure it's completion. This is then given back to the client to use in their landscaping.

Look at the plastic things you own. Are they recyclable? How do you find out?
All plastic items have the recycle symbol embossed on it, along with a number inside it. These numbers indicate what type of plastic it is and by extension, if it is recyclable.
1- PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) - is often used in most soda and water bottles, jars and caps. These leach carcinogenic chemicals when exposed to high sunlight. It is highly valued in recycling.
2- HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) – shampoo bottles, buckets, toys, garden furniture. Although more stable than PET, it should never be reused to store food. It is commonly recycled as well.
3- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) - used in pipes, clear plastic food wraps, doors and windows. Dubbed the poison plastic, it leaches the most chemicals. It is almost never recycled.
4- LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) – is used in sandwich bag, thick shopping bags, plastic wraps, coffee cups, bubble wrap. These leach relatively lesser chemicals than other plastics. Although recyclable, it’s difficult to collect and transport.
5- PP (Polypropylene) – is used for prescription boxes, car parts, straws. It does not leach many chemicals under high temperature. However, it is also one of the least recycled plastics.
6- PS (Polystyrene)- used in takeaway food containers, packing material. This leaches high amount of toxins under heat. It’s very rarely recycled because it’s an expensive process.
7- OTHER – includes all plastic other than the ones mentioned above. This category can often be found on baby bottles, water cans, eye- glasses, chips packets etc. They’re often not accepted by recyclers because of their diverse nature.

ESG – A New Vehicle of Change?
ESG reports require companies to provide certain disclosures. These disclosures are on a variety of aspects.
‘Environmental’ disclosures include waste generated, energy and water consumed, emissions generated, and details of environmental impact assessments conducted.
‘Social’ aspects of it include employee benefits, workplace health and safety, social impact assessment, measures of well being, performance reviews, ensuring supply chain partners are responsible, ethical and sustainable.
‘Governance’ aspect of it includes Ethical business practices, grievance redressal, cyber security policy, transparency and accountability.
An often-asked question is if ESG has impacts on the ground level. ESG is relatively new and does not have homogeneous standards throughout the world. There is a lot of debate on the criteria used for measurement and the subjectivity of the information measured.
However, it has had an intended trickle-down effect in the waste management sector. More IT Parks, large companies and factories are looking to sustainably dispose their waste. Pictured here is another ‘on the ground’ benefit of ESG - one of our clients conducted a rewards and recognition program to appreciate efforts put in by workers providing soft services, furthering the social aspects of ESG.
Although there are many challenges associated with ESG, it has the scope to usher in the ethical and sustainable practices we expect from a large corporation.

We follow the two-bin one-bag or the three bin system in our sites. We educate our clients and encourage them to practice source segregation to separate out dry and wet waste.
Wet waste like left over food, vegetable peels are checked to make sure they don’t have other items like paper in them. They are then diverted for composting.
The Dry waste is then separated into different categories at our on-site waste management yards or our central Material Recovery Facility. Here, tender coconuts are removed separately and sent for upcycling, where it is made into different products. Cardboard boxes, tissue paper, colour paper, are separated and sent to paper mills while plastic is sent for recycling.
If you want to implement source segregation and waste management at your office, college or apartment, give us a call!

In the hubbub of carbon footprints, EPR, and sustainability, we often forget the real warriors behind all these green credits, the hands that segregate the waste into different streams.
Issues of hygiene, stench, mixed waste affect our waste warriors just as much as they affect us.
Pictured here are Mrs. Gowri and Mr. Vignesh. In an industry with high employee attrition, Mrs. Gowri has shown strong commitment by staying with us for over 1.5 years.
Mr. Vignesh, who previously worked as a driver, now segregates garden waste at our site. His ability to take initiative, and go beyond what is expected, makes him a stellar employee. He doesn’t just punch a clock, but takes responsibility for his work.
We have plenty of warriors spread throughout the country. We salute every such warrior who has dedicated their lives to make others’ lives better.

Can Litter make our floods worse?
Litter is any waste thrown away in small pieces in places where it does not belong. While not many people fully understand the repercussions of littering, it's a dangerous trend and should not be taken lightly.
With time, litter turns into heaps leading to various problems. This includes micro plastic, air and water pollution, blocking of storm drains, hygiene and safety issues.
One might think, paper is biodegradable, so it’s okay if I throw it out the window of a moving bus, and it’ll disintegrate within a few days but worst part is its toxic ink which could contaminate nearby waterbodies. With rain, it most likely turns into mush and blocks rainwater drains.
For one person it might be just a small wrapper. But even if 1000 people in a city of 11 million people think way, it could result in the clogging of drains.
So, YOUR ACTION MATTERS. Please keep waste with you until you see a dustbin.

Our training sessions are more than ppts and monologues. We aim to conduct an interactive discussion with our waste warriors. Periodic training helps us reiterate important principles of segregation.
Health and Safety, Hygiene, Machine Operation, Reject Waste, Impacts of landfills, updates regarding waste management regulations, are some of the topics we discuss with them.
This helps exchange ideas, improving the work environment and its efficiency.
