Remembering S.N. Bose on his 128th anniversary of birth.
Bose was an Indian physicist who contributed to the study of a class of particles having integer multiple called the bosons. He collaborated with Albert Einstein to develop the Bose-Einstein statistics and predict the existence of the Bose-Einstein condensates in the 1920s. To honor his contributions to quantum physics, Paul Dirac coined the term bosons to represent the family of integer-multiple spin particles.
There are five elementary bosons in the Standard Model of physics: photon, W, Z, gluon, and Higgs. Since the family of particles is named after Bose, it is widely believed that he had played a role in the discovery and theory of the Higgs boson. But that's not the case. Bose worked on a completely different problem way before the Standard Model was developed. All the bosons were theorized and discovered by different physicists over the last century. Bose worked on the statistics of those particles.
